Taxes Hanging over my Head like a Demented Dark Cloud

March 29, 2016 1:15pm CST
For those of you whom I have been interacting with for the last couple years on Bubblews, this post may seem a bit of a deja vu sort of thing. Because.... I seem to do this EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Yes, I started my taxes right away, early February. I finished Federal because we get a refund and we owe state & local. So I need that refund in order to pay those due. Then, (I wrote about this once before), I received a 1099 AFTER I filed Federal. So that threw a whole other complicated wrench into the stress that is known as TAXES. This was the year... this was the year that a) it would be uncomplicated and b) I would get them all done by the beginning of March. Instead, here I sit... The next two weeks are going to be a nightmare because of kids' extra activities. Seriously. Crazy. (baseball, soccer for 3, volleyball, irish dance, and a play) It's never this crazy. This will be the absolute craziest 2 weeks of activities in the history of my history of motherhood. Of course, those 2 weeks are the two weeks leading up to April 15th. (ok, so technically there are 2 weeks plus a few days until tax day). Here I sit filled with dread because I have so much to do. And I don't even know where to begin. The whole other 1099 made it so much more complicated because I hadn't finished the states. So when I start the amended Federal, it assumes I finished the state. So.... Looks like i need to do the states (we have 2). Then do the amended on all 3. And of course local which we owe around $900.... Yuck. I hate taxes. Sadly, you will probably hear me say the same thing a year from now.

I agree with the politician who said a few years ago that the federal tax return should fit on a post card. It's as complicated as it is so all of those IRS employees can keep their jobs. I hope you get your taxes (or file an extension) soon. Taxes are no fun.

A post card is a great idea! Love it! My father tells me that years ago, he could just send his slips in and the government would do all the figuring for him. In a way that sounds great, but I guess I'd be a little worried they would skew the numbers in their favour

@jillybean1222 I feel for you. Our taxes are a lot less complicated than yours I believe.

Our taxes here could be a lot less complicated if the government didn't use them for social engineering, rewarding some behaviors while punishing others.

I have yet to file our state or federal taxes. It is all done and the missus has double checked them. All that is left is for me to make the changes she noted and file them. I checked my procrastinator's guide and found out tomorrow will be the perfect day to go ahead and do that.

That's okay, I think I repeat myself somewhat about certain things too. Mine is usually taxes and keeping up with my bookkeeping. I get 1099's after the fact, but I've already included the income from them in my figures, so they don't bother me at all. If they are for income received, why not make a note of that when you get the income and just include it form the beginning, then if it's running late it won't put a wrench in things for you? I was going to say I don't owe local taxes, but I guess I do except I pay them via my mortgage's escrow funds, so I don't have to pay out of pocket for those. What I have to come up with each quarter is the money owed the irs for employee and company payroll taxes. Last year was the first time I took them out each week when doing payroll. I kept them in my banking account, just minus the amounts on the register. THat made a big difference in stress for that. Now I just need to figure what is owed for the different business insurances so I can deduct those amount too on a monthly basis, and then more easily have those funds when they're due. If I can manage all of that and still have enough for household bills, then I'll know it's worth it to continue doing the business as long as possible and maybe next winter will be easier.

@jillybean1222 I thought those were solely for income?

This was an odd 1099, not for income. It was one of those things where they said, "You may get a 1099, you may not."

Isn't it annoying when you get some receipt or tax slip after you've already filed? I used to file in February every year, but now I tend to wait until late March or early April. Some places are so slow to send out slips, so unless I know I have everything I wait a bit longer these days....

@jillybean1222 Poor you! Can you file the corrections using some sort of Netfile option? I know here, we can only do an initial return that way. I think you have to file a paper copy if you need to change something after the fact.

Ours end up being in our favor overall with a refund from federal, but we always owe too much to our state. And the local tax makes me angry. And it makes me angry at my husband's employer for not withholding it. Most of the companies around here do the withholding. It's just 1% of our income. It doesn't feel like much if it is coming out of your paycheck each week, but coming up with it at the end is hard!

I do remember you "loving" tax time. We take our stuff to our accountant, but she's let us down this year. We paid her a week and a half ago, and she told me to give a couple of forms to her son, who works with me, once we sign them. I have had them at work for the past 8 days, yet he hasn't come by to pick them up. So I get a tiny refund, but it won't be efiled until she gets that signed form.......he picked them up at my desk today. My husband has to pay every year, so its time to find a new accountant I think! Happy filing!

We have not done our taxes yet. O, I am always an early bird in every thing that I do except filing our income taxes. Why? Because my wife and I always pay the government extra taxes in addition to the big chunks they are getting from our paychecks. I want 'em to wait longer!
