Gator Accident

My little cousin's age six and eight years old were racing on a Gator and a 4- wheeler. My eight-year-old little girl cousin was on the Gator, and my six-year-old cousin was on the four wheeler.
My cousin driving the Gator was ahead of the four wheeler, and looked behind her to see how close her brother was to her (because they were racing), she ran smack into a large Pecan Tree. She hit the tree, and it still ejected her from the Gator. My cousin is on a ventilator. The accident happened this past Tuesday, and she is going into surgery this morning.
She has a hole in her intestine. They have to go in and fix the hole and temporarily she will have a bag. They don't know if her lungs are going to be strong enough for the surgery so there is a possibility she will have to go back on the ventilator. She will have to keep the chest tubes as well. She will have the PICC line put in at some point before surgery.
I am going back to the hospital today. Keep good thoughts coming our way, because I am so worried about my little cousin.
I am including a link in-case someone here doesn't know what I am talking about when I say Gator accident.

Its heartbreaking to hear such stories. I always wonder when I see unsupervised children on ATVs.

It is heartbreaking. I know so many parent allow their children to drive Gaters, four wheeler, dirt bikes etc..., but it is so dangerous.

Thanks! I think she will have a full recovery. However, it will take time. She is out of danger now. I am so thankful she is doing as well as she is. They will put her in a regular hospital room tomorrow.

Yes, it was a horrible accident. It would be horrible at any age, but at only eight years old is terrible.

I'm sorry to hear of this accident, and I hope that she comes out of the surgery.
I have a nephew who had a brain bleed as a result of an accident he had on a 4-wheeler. It really brought my brother and his wife, the parents, to their knees. My father stepped in and laid the law down no more riding alone unsupervised even though he was 15 years old. These are not toys for young children and should be treated as such. I hope that your family learns the same lesson.

I wished the mother would learn the same lesson. She is saying she doesn't want her children to be afraid of the Gator. She plans on having her ride again when she comes home. I think it is a different type of parenting skill then what I am accustom too.

@Juliaacv Yes, her brother doesn't understand what happen. He is the one that went to the house to get help.

@slund2041 Well and no, you wouldn't want them to be afraid of it either, but driving it alone at that age would be one thing, racing it at that age is too young. I hope that she makes them wear a helmet, it was a helmet that saved my nephew's life when he had his accident. How is she doing? And her brother, he must be feeling so sad over all of this.

I'm sorry for not making myself more clear a gator is like a huge golf cart. My 8 year old cousin was driving the gator and her 6 year old brother was driving a four-wheeler and they were racing. My 8 year old cousin ran into a big tree and has hurt herself bad.

I hope and pray her can restore her. We know she has collapsed lungs, and a hole in her intestines.
