~Do You Leave Voicemails?~

For some reason so many people fail to leave a message when you don't answer the phone-from my experience anyway. My husband is the same way-he refuses to leave a message. I ask him why and he says, I don't like how my voice sounds on a recording. Lol! I never really thought about that! I wonder what other reasons there would be for not wanting to leave a message. Any ideas? I got curious since someone called the house phone earlier and didn't leave a message when I missed it...

With more and more people only having cell phones, often they don't even check their voicemail, they just look at missed calls. I can't tell you how many times I have left a message, only to have the person call me back without listening to it.

@norcal Yeah that is true with the cell phones! With my house number though I have no caller ID so I have to check messages in order to know who called.

Some people just dont like to talk to machines, others may be shy about how their voice may sound, others may be paranoid in the case that their voicemail may be used for something..who knows lolz

@LovingMyBabies Welcome..it depends for me if I feel like talking or what the issue is or who it is and on and on.

I too don't like leaving voice mails. In this day and age, where everybody has celphones that have caller ID's I assume that there are reasons why people don't pick up calls. And if they ate truly tied up, then they would call back.

@LovingMyBabies For the longest time I too had a land line that did not have caller ID. It also drove me nuts when it rang and I'd miss it, and whoever it was didn't leave any voice mails.

@bounce58 Yeah, my husband and I have one cell phone and the house phone. He takes the cell to work so I only have the house phone which has no caller ID. It makes it hard for me when people don't leave a message because I don't know who to call back. Lol

Yea I too don't like leaving voice mail, reason being I don't want to take the chance of the message being deleted by a third person, and this causing communication gap between me and the person I was trying to reach .

@vhpsandi Yeah that is definitely a possibility, never thought of that one!

I leave them if it's a friend or family member. They can see my number, too.

@DianneN I wish more people did on my phone because its a house phone with no caller ID. I don't know who called so I can't call them back.

@LovingMyBabies I'm sure half of them are from unwanted callers. If it's someone you know, they'll call back.

It's kind of awkward and I'm not used to it. Sometimes, I don't even know how to use it. I'd rather text or call the person especially if I'll be leaving a sensitive or important message.

@rina110383 Yeah most people feel this way, I am finding that out from this discussion. So glad I asked everyone's thoughts because I didn't realize!

I will leave a message sometimes. For instance, if I'm trying to get in touch with my doctor, or something like that. But if I'm just trying to call my husband, or my mom, or something, then I won't. I know they have caller id, and they'll see I called. And for the most part, if I'm just calling family, it's usually not important.

@LovingMyBabies it's a little different with caller id. Most people I know have it, I believe.

@dodo19 Yeah, I leave a voicemail most of the time. I understand calling someone with caller ID is different though.

It depends on who I am calling and why I am calling them. If I am calling a friend or a family member just to talk, then I usually won't leave a message, because I figure they are busy and I didn't really have a reason other than to chat with them. If it is something important, though, then I will leave a message. If it is a business, then I usually do not leave a message, because I want to talk with someone directly not leave a message and wait for someone to call me back. On the other hand, if I know that I can only speak with that particular person, then I will usually leave a message.

@LovingMyBabies I understand. I did not have caller ID for the longest time, so I would not be able to call people back if they did not leave messages, either. I also screened my calls a lot, because there were a few people that I did not want to be bothered by, so that made it even more frustrating when they would not leave a message, especially since most people knew that I would pick up the phone when they started talking if I was there.

@Purplealabaster Yeah that's a good reason if your just calling to talk about every day things and its nothing important. It just makes it hard when someone doesn't leave me a message because I don't have caller ID so I don't know who to call back without a message left.

Sometimes I think that people are screening, and do not want to hear from that caller. I pick and choose when I will leave a message, it depends on the purpose of the call.

@Juliaacv I guess in some situations people might screen their calls that way. I don't have caller ID though so it makes it hard if someone doesn't leave me a message because I don't know who to call back!

I don't have trouble leaving voice messages but I always smile as I speak. I've heard recordings of my voice and somehow you can tell when I'm smiling.

I only leave voicemails when I feel that it is important to get a call back otherwise I feel like there is no sense of urgency. Mostly I text people if they dont answer their phones and I think its the age we live in now where people would rather text than spend time on the phone with someone. Our communication has almost dwindled down to nothing, its actually quite sad

@CastleRock34 Yeah I used to text most of the time too. But right now since I don't have a cell phone that's not possible. It is sad that people don't talk much anymore.

Many people don't like the sound of their own voice but for me its just I hate talking to a machine and as you mentioned most people just delete them. If it was a live person it makes me more likely to leave a message.

@LovingMyBabies I hate playing phone tag anyway. I figure the person will wait until I am in the middle of a doctors apt or some other important event before returning the call anyway.

I will always leave a voice message if the subject matter is important because I believe that the importance can be conveyed more clearly with my voice than through typing a text.

@ljdemmler Yeah texting can sometimes turn into someone thinking we mean something else entirely. I hate that about texting-you can't tell what someone means by what they say at times.
