Opening a jar of pickles

Japan

I am not very good at opening jars. Yesterday I went to open a jar of pickles. My usual method is 1. try to open 2. hit the edge with a spoon or something to dent it, three times, in a kind of triangle, to break the seal 3. try again. Fortunately I took off my sweater that I didn't want to have to wash before opening this jar of pickles, because it came open suddenly and I got pickle juice all over my front. I have learned! Do you have a favorite way to open jars?

I usually use brute strength. My parents had a "jar opener," but I don't have one. Sometimes running on the top of a jar under hot water helps. So does a dry cloth between your hand and the jar top. I have no idea why.

I have the same method as you.. I will try to open the jar as is. If I can't, I will hit the edge of the jar all around with a knife, spoon, fork, anything then it'll be a little loose. Then, I'll try to open it and it generally will work.

Lately I don't have the strength I need to open jars anymore. I have a jar opener that grips the lid and I'm able to open it with ease.

@petatonicsca Picture a figure 8 with one loop small for smaller lids and the other larger for large lids. The inside of each loop has grips on it. I've taken a picture of it.

Tell me about this jar opener. I have a silicone jar gripper but I still need to have strength. What is yours like? I think I need one.

I used to have this red rubber grip pad we used to use on jars we couldnt open, but most of the time I could open any jar. My mom used to call me vice hands lol. Reading the word pickles makes me want a entire jar, I love pickles!!

1. Try to open 2. Tied a rubber band round the jar lid, and try again (usually this works) 3. Boil hot water, and soak the top of the jar in the water for a few seconds (usually just the jar lid). Then I will use the tablecloth to protect my hand and try to open

I know that if you twist it open and then one twist closed then another twist open its easier - but I normally give to my hubby to open or put in warm water to loosen the lid.

Give it to my husband. Just joking as sometimes I can open jars that he can't. We have a jar-opening gizmo which works sometimes. Wrapping an elastic band round the lid is supposed to help. Maybe it gives you better grip. I can't imagine any other way in which it would work.

I have that problem with jars they are stubborn to open at times especially when the lids are really big. I usually smack the bottom of the jar with my palm and it makes a pop noise and then when i set it on the counter and twist the lid comes right off without a problem.
