Do you know matcha? "Matcha is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea. It is special in two aspects of farming and processing: The green tea plants for matcha are shade-grown for about three weeks before harvest, and the stems and veins are removed in processing." Matcha is green tea but with matcha you are ingesting the entire leaf, since matcha made from the entire leaves which stoneground to be powder while with ordinary green tea, you just brewed the leaves. Supposedly better than regular green tea, though more expensive. I know about it since I was a child since my parents love to get Japanese stuff at our home. It was so rare those days. But now I can see Matcha everywhere, as ice cream flavor, as milk tea, as bubble drink, as steambun, or cake. Do you like Matcha? Since when you know about it?

I am Japanese, but was born and raised in the US. I grew up with green tea, but don't recall knowing any tea by name. I know matcha has gotten popular here in recent years, but I can't remember when exactly I heard of it. Oh yes, I saw some organic matcha powder in the stores - and I think it was like $15 - I'm not even sure how much was actually in that container - I didn't buy it although I am tempted to. I see a lot of matcha snacks on the shelves these days too!

@randomarts09 Everything from Japan seems to be pretty expensive! I noticed there are recipes using matcha now. I am interested in using it, but I just don't know if it's worth the price. I guess there are health benefits, but I suppose drinking the tea is the best way to get it.

In my country, powdered Matcha from Japan is pretty expensive. Yeah, even local factory started to produce Matcha snacks or ice cream now in my country. Though I believed if they used original powdered Matcha as flavor (not just chemical), they will still imported that ingredient from Japan

@much2say Yeah, I also heard that the cost of living in Japan is also pretty expensive to many people. But the tea costume of Japan is awesome, and elegant, called "Sa Do" ("Way of Tea"). This is not only delicious but also healthy with the awesome and beautiful "tea drinking ceremony" which is one of remarkable Japanese costume.

I have seen such tea selling in the supermarket. We do not use the name Matcha, and everyone calls it as the Japanese green tea. I do not like it. I prefer to have the whole leaves and when I make tea, I enjoy seeing the dried up leaves opened up.

I see, do you see it as a flavor for ice cream or cookies or something in your country? I think it's gaining popularity these days in my country with all sort of dessert made with Matcha flavor

Japanese green tea, to me, is the steeped leaves. Matcha is a bitter powder made from grinding up the leaves and it tastes pretty different and feels thick in your mouth. Green tea is light and refreshing.

I think me too, original powdered matcha tastes a little bitter, with ice cream it would erase it and become sweet instead

It seems that matcha has become much more popular in these recent years. And today they use matcha to make the cakes and ice-cream. But I personally don't like this flavor because it is a little odd for me. I prefer to drink the green tea directly.
