Backpack, messenger bag, briefcase, or none? What do you use?

I'm curious because I've tried the first two but now thinking about (for back reasons and fashion reasons) getting rid of my 3 yr old bulky north face backpack and either switching back to a slim incase one I have or getting a messenger back. What do you use and why?

I prefer handbags! Backpacks tend to get messy and are often too huge, and is really a problem when boarding a crowded public vehicle. Sling bags strain my shoulders! Hence, handbag's the winner!
