Living with Rats

No, not THAT kind of rat! I don't mean the pest that lurks in the basement and chews up your house. I mean pet rats! I have 3 pet rats – Apple, Bianca, and Everlee. They make awesome pets. They are very intelligent and loving little critters. They know their own names and have learned to beg for food. Rats can learn other tricks but I choose to let them be their ratty little selves. Bianca has taught herself to climb across the top of the cage upside down, which is quite a sight. They all enjoy sitting on top of the un-attached wheel, which they un-attach if I try to keep it attached. They are quite entertaining to watch. The will however – as loving as they are – bite you any chance they get. They are rats, after all. When I take their water bottle off to refill it, they will fight like mad for the chance to nip at my fingers! What can you do, except call them little rats!

I had a pet rat named Ben when I was younger. Brought back memories. Smart rats, they know their names, and I'm sure they can perform some tricks. Alright now!

Well, if you like them why not? Not something I would personally keep as a pet. I'll keep my cats. They are cuddly and don't bite the hand that feeds or waters them.

Do you wear gloves when you get the water bottle. I know I would.

No, I just blow on the ratties so they get annoyed and climb back down the side of the cage. They've gotten better about learning not to bite me unless they get a good opportunity.

I love rats, they're one of my favorite animals. I know it sounds strange but they are. I've had 4 pet rats through out my life (and many more rodents). They're so smart and they all have different personalities.

Oh yes on the personalities! Apple is dominant and bossy. Biance is shy and didn't like her sisters or people until recently. Everlee is sweet and looooooves humans.

@Lolaze I had a bossy rat. My rat Saya, was really bossy, and pushy. I'd offer them Cheerios Saya would run by and try to scoop most of them up so her sister wouldn't get any. Her sister on the other hand would take one Cheerio andwas really content with one at a time.

I saw some videos on rats one day and they are very smart. I was surprised at all the stuff they had them doing. :)
