Time to start burning leaves

We've had our first rains for the season and all the summer fire-bans have been lifted. We're now able to get out and burn up rubbish and leaves. We do some burning each year as it makes the property that bit safer when the summer comes and the inevitable bushfires. The leaves are wet from the rain of the last few days so the smoke is white and thick. We and our clothes smell of smoke too so I'll change shortly and put these clothes on tomorrow when we burn a bit more.
Later this afternoon we are taking some of Vince's photos to a winery to be displayed for a week or two. He is quite excited about that as you can imagine. We haven't framed them as he doesn't really expect to sell any. They are mounted on adhesive white thick card then stuck with double sided tape to black card. I'll do a post and a photo once they are on the wall.

It is quite exciting in a way but none of the artwork which has been on display has sold. But then the photos aren't two or three hundred dollars each either. I think he is hoping he might get some assignments from the display rather than selling too many. It has kept him occupied and happy for a while which has quite a value in itself. :)

That's a good idea. Eucalypt leaves don't compost easily and we don't have a lot of grass to cut here but it's good that you're doing this.

do you leave the ash from the burnt leaves there? does burning affect the soil?

@jndlponti He has a Nikon but he isn't here for to ask any more details about it. I know he has a zoom lens and I think a macro lens.

I have an incinerator that we have built to burn leaves. I will write a post on that.

Good luck with those photos! We have a law in TN that burning leaves is unlawful. Plus we can't burn between Oct.-May w/o a burn permit due to the winds during that time frame.

@AbbyGreenhill We don't ever burn rubbish - just leaves and branches.

The more rubbish and leaves we burn now, the less there will be when the bushfire season returns. Kids love a fire don't they?

Well I hope they do sell if that's what the goal is. =) I wouldn't burn here because we have a nosy neighbor so were worried about him calling the law on us.

haven't burned leaves in years, but haven't lived in an area they piled up like that. I do remember dad running them through the yard shredder thing, and letting the wind take the pieces

@Jessicalynnt I wouldn't have said they were thicker. There is a lot of oil in them which makes them very flammable once there is a bit of heat in a fire. We burn them simply to make the area around the house barer and safer from bushfire embers lighting up the rubbish (leaves). I know they take a long time to break down in compost and we don't have enough garden to need the compost.

Thanks for the good wishes. We don't really expect to sell much as there doesn't seem to be a lot of money around for extras at the moment. However he hopes he might get asked to take some portraits perhaps. It's all a bit of fun and an interest.
