No I do not mean the "weed" that popped into your mind. Every time I take one of those herb classes I end up coming home feeling like I should be in the back yard grazing. I keep hearing how many of the common plants of my back yard are good and healthy. If I ever get my act together I may tell you all about them but it will not be tonight. I think I need to go find me some nettles to plant.

I am sure you have plants that are strangers to me. I have not been brave enough to make a salad or stir fry from them yet.

@jndlponti I know which ones to use and have sampled them in other classes, but have not done it on my own.

Nettles are great, we use them to prepare several dishes. The leaves were also used to dye the fabrics.

If I look some more I may find them in my yard, but if not I may find some elsewhere and bring them home. What color would they dye things?

They can be used for a large category of dishes, but nobody would plant nettles in Europe, as they grow wild anywhere.

@topffer You are right, there are plenty along the small river that runs on the side of our property.

I was here for the 'weed'. I was wrong. Looking to start planting some herbs myself. Need to be self-sufficient during these times.

I knew someone would have that interpretation. Yes, it is great to grow our own seasonings and salads.

@GardenGerty If it was my set of friends, we will be thinking about the same thing... spending time with Mary Jane.

I also like to forage wild edible plants, and I prepared once a complete nettle meal for friends : the drinks were served with nettle chips, they were followed by a nettle soup, a nettle bouillabaisse, and I prepared nettle fritters for dessert. Although they were reluctant to eat nettles, the lunch has been a complete success.

I hear that nettles are very good for a number of health systems in our body.. Although I do not have nettles yet that I have found, I have a number of other wild plants that are good to eat.

@GardenGerty If you plant nettles, you have to know that it is an invasive plant and that they sting. It is not very dangerous, but enough to give you itching during 2 days. You need to pick them with gloves. Usually you eat only young leaves which are full of vitamins and essential trace elements, and are tasting good. When they become older, they taste like fish, and many people do not like them. They will not grow if the weather is hot in your area. They like a mild climate and are killed by the first frost.

I do like having plants in my backyard. But then, it is limited for having tropical blooms. I am living in the mountainside of my country. I could see some wild plants and cannot distinguish much if it possible for them to be planted in my garden.

Maybe some kind of vine that would climb up your house and bloom would be good.

Until someone finds a use for a plant it is always considered a weed.

I am very careful to identify things before tasting, although as a child I tasted everything.
