there was a phase in uk politics for political correctness where words like manhole cover were expected to be changed for phrases like 'underground access chamber hatches', etc. It never caught on.

When things get TOO PC, I cringe. I just do what I can at my personal ground zero: treat men and women with equal respect, pay them the same, etc.

I would have to say you have been kind to the language, there are many wards containing 'man' for example 'human', why isn't it huwoman? If you want to sue someone it is not the creator of the dictionary (as he, and it was a he, simply collected the words together) but the inventor of the word and you would have to look so far back in time that the language was no longer English, but Anglo-Saxon - good luck with that law suit.

@vandana7 When I write I try to avoid gender bias, for example I use "they" when describing any unknown person whereas many writers solely us "he" or more recently "she", which is in my view as bad as any use of "he".

So you'd like to see the perpetrator in manacles? For mangling the English language? What mantra would you chant as you manhandled this individual onto the stockade? . That was a manly attempt at humour, if you hadn't managed to spot it!

@pgntwo I think Vanny MANaged to get you right there. I think you should admit defeat and knock out a tune on your Mandolin and sing to her from your MANuscripts in Mandarin. You could always send her a MANnequin with a MANdolin to grate her MANgoes. I dare say she will become MANgled with all this MANliness coming from the UK. Perhaps she could take her MANners and Mantras to MANila and relax in a MANSion. I think at this stage she is possibly Manic with laughter!

I think back then, the world was better with no activists around and the women knew they were secure and better off. Today, it is the activists who have feeded (okay this is no word, but I have no idea what should go here, hope you get my version) them with being inferior because the activists of today can bring up anything for their own good and marketing [Just my views on the lighter sides]

Well maybe because thats how it works a million years ago. Men were always the superior in those years. We will always taught to used a he everytime the gender is not specified. It is just in later years that we are able to prove that we are equal to them hence the gender descrimination act was conceived. Now we are more likely to use terms like firefighters instead of firemen, etc.

@vandana7 oh okay. That is why gender descrimination is a huge problem in india. I thought all countries have it now. The law just started a few years back. It is with regards to the UN human rights thingy. The government is here giving one month each year devoted for info drive regarding the law. As there are still women who didnot know their rights..

I think we need to blame the creator of a dictionary. They tend to exclude women in some terms and it violates gender equality.

You are looking at the dictionary with a "feminist" approach. The word womanpower and womankind also exist. It also exist womanize.

Meanings differ.. manpower means ..labor...womanpower does not mean women labor.. Mankind means human species, womankind means only women ...why? The number under mankind should only refer to men..should not include women..logically...

@vandana7 In most ancient times men worked and women stayed at home and this was considered a privilege until the feminists wanted equality and now the women work double, at home and in the offices. I am not sure that this is progress.

I am myself more careful over the years with such usage. I see subtle changes in the media too but I get confused when terms like actors are used when referring to female gender - no harm in calling them actresses - siva

@vandana7 Frankly, I don't see Indian films because they do not make sense to me - there are the exceptions of course. Not that I see others anyway. A few snippets through videos are enough. And I do not know why they make films pairing actors with those who could be just their grand daughters. Then I am reminded of one comedian responding to why he gets slapped all the time. His reply - they pay me for that! siva

In a bus here there is special seats for woman only general seats for men. When a tree plant , animal grow mature if that is male one it cuts mercilessly because it could not bear fruit. Then is word woman empowerment. I don't hear any word manempowerment.

Hello, in a society that is made up of almost 40 percent women and children, you reserve 20 percent seats for them, and feel they are getting special privilges? Without those reservations, even those seats would not be spared for them. That is how unchivalrous our society is....and we were talking of man and woman...not bull and cow..

@vandana7 Sorry for your feelings. In every field of society, democracy woman participation is Welcoming . India is such a great country with one of the woman prime minister. You can look at MLA or MP seats. Only Man's power pop ups when there is no active member from the other side. I don't think that woman are excluded.
