Do you do it morning or evening?

When I was still living at home and quite young, our birthdays were special. We had to wait in bed and would be so excited as the procession formed then everyone, 3 siblings and Mum and sometimes dad, would troop into the bedroom in single file holding cards and little gifts and singing Happy Birthday. It was such a great day. In the evening we would have soft drink with our meal, sometimes cup cakes but always a birthday cake with candles. After dinner, the lights would go out as Mum carried the lit cake from the kitchen to the dining room and again, everyone sang Happy Birthday. Years pass and sometimes I receive a phone call with the person at the other end singing - or not, sometimes there's a card. What I really detest though is when the call or message is received at the end of the ruddy day when it's all over. I mean what's the point of that?

Well, at least they remembered. There are times when I am overwhelmed with birthday wishes and others that the day goes unnoticed but by myself.

I spend lonely birthdays when no-one calls early. Them remembering at the end of the day is a disappointment for me.

@MsTickle but MsTickle, they did remember to call. I know many that go years without hearing from their loved ones. Not sure why their family became so distant. Broke my heart to see them so sad.

My birthday goes by pretty much unnoticed by everyone these days. And I don't really mind. The world is filled with more important issues than me.

Yes, I agree. Sometimes though, a sad thought enters my head, memories ensue and so I share.

a message i didnt expect came early on my birthday and it somehow (just a bit) made me feel uneasy. but i do get your point. everybody greeted me earlier on my birthday and it put a smile on my face the whole day.

I'm so pleased you understand the point I was making. I know what you mean by an early morning call making you a bit uneasy. Calls very late at night also make me uneasy.

Love the title! I was going to say "both", but then again it's not MY birthday. I think early in the day is better, as it sets you up for the rest of the day. It stops you fretting that you have been forgotten and all is well with the world.

My sentiments exactly, *nods head. I wonder if anyone avoided this because of the title?

I usually greet family members 12:01 am. I always put them on alarm and on my calendar. But with friends, there are times when I greet them at night. When you're an adult, you have a lot going on that I do not know what the date is sometimes.

So childish of me to believe that adults may also want toenjoy their birthday.

Those are great memories that you have for your birthday when you lived at home.

When I was little it was mostly in the evening, unless I had a party that year, in which that case it would probably be a Saturday afternoon. We celebrated in the evening because by the time I got up my dad would already have left for work, and then of course I had to go to school since my birthday is in the fall and that is why it would be in the evening when everyone was home. However, I love your birthdays, you must have a summer one to have to stay in bed and wait for everyone.

My birthday is in early October but on family birthdays, we would start the day just a wee bit earlier so there was still time to get ready for work and school, have breakfast and leave.

@MsTickle I see. I don't know if I could have gotten up at 5:30 when I was a kid, I love my sleep and still do... Of course if it was something done since I was a baby, I probably wouldn't have minded.

In some small way , yes, but I feel for the person who waited all day for a birthday message that didn't come till later and so their special day passed in disappointment.

It's still your birthday, even if it's in the evening, and at least they haven't forgotten you.

Agreed, but meanwhile I have been anticipating a call all day. To me, I truly want my friend or sibling to enjoy all of their birthday, not just receive a relatively meaningless call when it's practically over.

Yes, there's that aspect too. It's my eldest daughter's b'day tomorrow and I've been remembering to remember for over a week now. It won't be the first time if I forget to call.

@MsTickle Isn't it annoying to remember for weeks before, then remember the day before then remember again the day after?

So pleased you said this. When you are wishing someone a Happy Birthday, don't you wish for their whole day to be happy? Not just the evening?

I always would like to greet a birthday celebrator , in advance like a day before , or in the morning of the birthday . Though , when i forgot it , i would still greet the birthday celebrator .

I understand what you mean, aging, the birthdays are no more the same. It's good enough to receive a call and it's really upsetting when most of your family forgets.
