Visiting A Friend: Do You Just Ring the Doorbell or Phone Them First?

I am not sure with you guys. If I am planning to visit a friend, I tend to call them first. I think it is better to call them up to determine if he or she is not at home. You just imagine the time for preparation and traveling, there is no friend at home. Sometimes I also call or send a text message to my neighbors before dropping by to their house. It seems knocking the door is not the usual thing for me to do now. I can still remember the old days. How about you? Do you still knock or ring the doorbell?

I phone them first to let them know I am on my way or almost there. Then when I get there I knock or ring the doorbell.

@DanielGirl80587 I do think that we really need to inform them ahead of time. Since it is not good to disturb the peacefulness of their lives.

i always tell friends to call me first before knocking -- so i can think of an alibi. kidding.. i honestly dont get visitors and i never go to friends house. just not my thing. but seriously, there are cases that i accept visitors and i always make sure to let them text me first just to make sure im there to welcom them.

We often just show up at a friend's doorstep. I tell my husband we should call first because often times they are not home or have company.
I myself prefer that people call me first so I can have time to tidy up our home. It is not always in the shape to greet people.

@msiduri It is the culture here.
We do not usually visit our friends at home.
We meet at the malls or other places.
I think the reason is that many of us live in very small apartments, and when you have friends coming for visit all the time, it will disrupt the other family members.

Thanks for the post. I always ring the friend first. Because most people live at long distances away. If a go and dont find the friend it is a waste of effort.

@sathviksouvik I agree. We need to consider it.

I prefer to call first, not everyone likes drop ins. I think most people like to have a courtesy call so that they have time to tidy up, run a vacuum, pick up dirty socks and shoes lying around. I don't like it when people just show up at my place, especially after a long day at work.

@beaniefanatic I agree. We need to let them have an ample time to sort out things in their houses. Thus, we can also know if they are at home.

Today everybody can be busy. So I always contact my friends sevearl days before I visit them. And sometimes I will even confirm it again 1 day before. It is better to make an arrangement at first, otherwise it may waste both of our time.

I would definitely ring him/her first or send a text message I don't want my effort go to waste finding out that the person I want to see is not at home.
