Recently I have come across an article which mentions that the daily breads contains potassium bromate and potassium iodate that are carcinogenic . So I did some research on these words and I understand is that it leads to cancer. and thyroid disorder . So is eating bread safe ?

I think unhygienic conditions are more severe than the fear of bread consumption due to unproved data.

Everything in excess and unhygienic preparations can harm the body somewhere.

Yes I agree but I do not know if this is a propaganda or an awareness .

I think it all depends on what bread you're eating. Not all bread is made the same way. Bread is definitely safe, so long as you buy bread with very simple and natural ingredients. I have never heard of bread doing anything other than making you "fat."

I agree white bread contribute to weight gaining and whole wheat and multi grain are supposed to be good for your health. I understand that the ingredient mentioned by me is hazardous and I also just hope it is not used in the bread I eat.

@lexinonomous unfortunately the local breads do not have detailed descriptions. We get local breads and packed ones. The packed ones have the description and they do not mention the dangerous ingredients for obvious reasons.

@zap_81 Anything in excess is going to make you gain weight. The best way to figure out what is in your bread is by looking at the ingredients. They should be fairly simplistic.

@vandana7 So I guess the article does not include brown dread or whole wheat or multi grain. I just hope this is not another maggi episode.

I do eat bread. Normally a whole wheat bread and though the article has restricted itself to only white bread , I am wondering what about the other types of bread. Whole wheat and multi grain are in vogue.

Never really heard about this. I am pretty sure it is safe as long as it does not contain any artificial flavours.

Well you should look on it on the internet. The latest development is that potassium bromate is now not allowed in the manufacture of bread.

Which country do you live in because potassium bromate is banned in a lot of the world but still used in the USA and a few other places. You need to check as it's been banned in my country for 25+ years. Potassium iodate is quite different and is actually used to prevent thyroid cancer after release of radioactive iodine - such as happened at Fukashima..

@zap_81 I would suspect - and I have worked in companies that sold ingredients to the Indian bread industry - that it's only in industrial bread and not in local traditional flatbreads etc. Avoid the packaged sandwich bread - or check the ingredients lists carefully.

@boiboing if we leave the packaged one then we are left with out local bread. So is this the only option ? lastly what are your views on whole wheat and multi grain breads?

India. We have been told that it is being used in the making of our daily breads . I am wondering if it is as bad as they are proclaiming then we really are in a danger.

I am fond of eating breads as my snack. Don't know that eating breads has a disadvantage. I just know that instant foods are not good but not bread.

The article is explicit that the ingredients of white breads are disadvantage. I would advise you do read about it.

an article"In bread, the growth of yeast releases carbon dioxide, which forces the bread to rise. Yeast does not survive the baking process, but many of the allergy-causing proteins do. For this reason, you may find that bread causes problems if you are allergic to yeast. It may also be one reason that some people feel fatigue after eating bread....

So is it the time to say goodbye to bread ? If yes then is there a healthy substitution ?
