Before You Say Anything about 29 Palms, CA....the Andrews Sisters

Hosting the east entrance to Joshua Tree National Park and some of the most beautiful desertscape in the world, what's not to like about 29 Palms? There will always be those who have a comment or two about any place but there is an old saying "Those who matter do not judge and those who judge do not matter". Seems most people know this town due to the Marine base, but with the national park, Tortoise Rock Casino and some of the starriest nights this side of heaven it is a best kept secret. Even the Andrews Sisters had some inside knowledge back in 1947 ("The Lady from 29 Palms"). Yippee Ki Yay! <iframe width="640" height="360" src=" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

I'm not sure where the name comes from. The trees in the pic are joshua trees. It's near one of the entrances to Joshua Tree National Park where we camp usually twice a year. And yes, it's beautiful, but it's hot as hades in the summer.

@msiduri I knew the ones in the picture weren't palms, but didn't know that they were Joshua trees. I did think they might be from the name, but I've never seen one. So what is '29 Palms'? Is it an area inside the park, or what? I'm guessing you wouldn't be camping there in the summer if it's that hot?

There are more than 29 Palms in the city, but the designation has historical significance. 29 Palms is a city that has drawn a lot of musicians, artists and urban escapees. The park is on Federal land just south of Highway 62 and Utah Trail near the center of town. People actually camp year round, but yes it is less during the hottest months. You actually probably have seen Joshua Trees in the background of movies, mostly westerns and even in the Terminator, and a lot of car commercials are shot out here. Just pay attention to the trees in the background...you will see the Joshua Trees if you look.

Did anyone watch the video. I know the link came out a bit odd, but the youtube one should work. Otherwise look up "The Lady from 29 Palms". Andrews Sisters circa 1947...the community started here in the 1920s through homesteaders.

@arthurchappel Thank you so much BUT no matter how hard I try I cannot get the link to work. When I hit delete link, it deleted your comment. I went back to you tube and tried to embed it again...it put a different video on. The good news is I found that Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney and her sister also did the "Lady from 29 Palms". What am I doing wrong I cannot fix it? Maybe you can link it in your comment....

I have been there in the 90's, I do not remember exactly the year. We have visited the park and I am sure we took photos of the Joshua trees. I have seen the same trees when we crossed the Mojave desert.
