It Irks Me When People Don't Cash Checks Right Away

It drives me crazy when people don't cash checks right away and it's one of my pet peeves. I sent my daughter a check for her birthday at the end of May. She never acknowledged receiving it so eventually I had to ask if she received it. She said she did and was forthcoming with a big thank you and how much she appreciated it. Today her check finally cleared the bank. A whole month later. I don't know what her reasons are for holding on to the check for so long but it just irks me that she doesn't cash it right away. Lucky for her that I deduct that money immediately from my bank account and have considered that money gone for weeks now. Imagine her surprise if it had bounced since she took so long to cash it. Do you hold on to checks when you get them or cash them right away?

I wonder why she didn't acknowledge receiving the check right away, it is the least she could have done.

I do all my business online except for the rent. But, whether online or by check, I congratulate your practice of considering the money gone at the time you make the transaction. There are people who play the 'waiting game' and that's how they end up with overdrafts and ruin their credit.

I do exactly the same if I have to write a cheque, deduct it from my available balance immediately and consider the amount to be spent. As for cashing cheques, I have to make a special visit to the bank, so I often have one for 2 weeks or so. The only cheques that I receive are from my electricity company for my solar power generation, which are sent every 3 months. I really wish that they would stop using cheques, especially considering that I always pay them via direct bank transfer.

I've been caught because of late cashed checks before. I tend to avoid using checks for that reason.

what other reasons one will have. She must be busy or she must have misplaced it for to be found ater one month.

I feel the same as you. if it is from an individual and not a company, I realize they may not remember the money could come out at any time.

I think cheque's have a time limit? You wouldn't like me then. Once I at work I held my pay back one month (could do it as an employee on computer server) so I could see what a real cheque looked like. They didn't like it either. Sorry.

In the US checks have a basic time limit of ninety days unless it says differently on the face of the check.

We usually take them in within a few days, the next time we are in the area of the bank, but wouldn't leave a personal check for a month, that's not very considerate. If you'd like to write me a check, I can show you how quickly I can cash it-LOL

I never hold onto checks! And my mother's favorite work was "irk" - you made me think of her!

That's rude. Thank God we have more money in the bank these days. Folks used to do that to me and then I'd be in trouble, getting dinged for not having enough money in my account- they'd charge me and it would be the other person's fault for hanging onto the check for so long.

We receive very few cheques nowadays but I have to admit we can be very tardy about cashing them. I'll try to do better in future. I hadn't thought about the impact on the sender.

When I had a car and I could get to the bank right away, it wasn't a problem. But one time a check that someone had sent me somehow got lost in a pile of papers and I didn't find it again until about a year later. I made a call to apologize and didn't want a replacement. Just wanted to let the person know that the check had never been cashed. It was terribly embarrassing.

I try to cash checks within a week of receiving them. I don't like it when someone doesn't cash a check right away and doesn't acknowledge they have received it.

When it comes to gift checks, we have always cashed them right away - for all the reasons you mentioned as we know how it goes on the other end too.

i guess she didn't need the money yet, or she didn't know that you have to maintain a balance when you have a checking account.
