Who knows what goes on in the mind of a cat?

My kitten, Mephistopheles, is clearly destined to become a scientist. It seems that his speciality may be in Fluid Mechanics because, at the moment, he is fascinated by water - particularly dripping taps and overflowing bowls. The thing is that he hates getting his paws and nose wet, though he has discovered that it is one way of drinking. Of course, it may not be the scientific aspect of water which mainly interests him, though his reflection in the surface and the shadow of his head on the bottom is also something which needs serious investigation. He may, in fact, be exploring divination by means of reflections in water, or, to give it its proper name - CATOPTROMANCY. There, there's a new word for all you cat lovers! At least, it was a new word for me!

I suspect that most of the time a cat's mind is focused on how to get it's own way, at which they are usually quite successful.

He has me round his littlest claw, if the truth be known. We are currently trying to learn that cats are not allowed on the table but he has a strategy for that, too, which is crouching low on the table when I say "Off!" in the hopes that I won't see him. Cats are very like small children!

It's really practicing ignorance, ignoring any animate object larger than itself... ;)

@pgntwo Until they want something from us larger animated objects, at which time they make absolutely certain that we cannot ignore them.

Cats who like water may get wet. Purrsonally, I have no interest and will wait for the report and read that. Love from Freya, the water hating Catblog Cat

Well, Madame Freya, I has discovered that water is cold but do not hurt becos you cans lick it off clean. I does not likes it on my face or my head and in my nose it makes me snuffle, so I goes away and washes when it gets too tickly and wet. Love from Mephistopheles (this are big words which I not understands and cans not mew - it is like Mew-Hiss-Cough-Spit -Sneeze and I think my mother made it for me but I is not sure. I don't remembers my mother very well. My hoomin who is calls Howl-ings says it when I is on the table and he has told me NOT!)

Cats have dominion over everything. They are gods trapped in small bodies and everything - most of all humans - are there to serve them (which includes asking their slaves to turn on the tap so it dribbles)! I'm planning on getting him a water fountain.

@Poppylicious That is so true! He has a very nice scratching post but he still claws the furniture because it commands instant attention!

@owlwings But he's a cat! You'll get him a water fountain and he'll still insist on playing with the water from the tap!

That's a long name, have you thought of an abbreviation for it?

Yes, it is certainly a mouthful but that is what he told me his name was when he was a tiny kitten. I think that his mother must have been reading Goethe! He is either Mister or Misty usually, It is only when he has been particularly naughty that I use all five syllables.

Water is quite fascinating so I can understand his interest. Do you say that whole name when you call him or have you given him a name like Mephy or Stopholes for short? My cat likes to drink from a bucket, although he'd drink from the toilet if we let him.

Cats and dogs are very fond of drinking from toilets, for some reason. Of course, it's not quite as disgusting as we percieve it to be because they have a different set of bacteria and viruses which make them ill, nevertheless, we don't particularly want them to spread the germs around the house! I think that we have settled on "Misty" or "Mister" as his everyday name and he is showimg signs that he knows that's his name, though he may be responding to the tone of my voice (cross, summoning/calling, affectionate &c.). Cats and dogs do have very acute hearing and certainly recognise the sounds of certain words very quickly, just as they recognise the sound of a particular car engine and can accurately distinguish it in the general traffic noise long before we can. The difference is that dogs are much more responsive to spoken commands from humans (who are seen as 'pack members') whereas cats are essentially loners and, if anything, only see humans as 'friends with benefits'.

Thank you for the new word! That's a great picture. My black cat likes to dash the water out of his bowl and onto the floor. He also drinks it from his paw. Feline filtration system, I suppose.

I think that all cats are fascinated by water though most don't like getting wet at all. I knew a cat once who ate by picking up food with his paw and licking it off!

@puddleglum He gets fed at 5:30 or 6:00 as I am making coffee (for me). He first shows me where his dry food is (as if I didn't know) and tells me to fill up his bowl (even though there is plenty of dry food in it), then he ignores it and mews impatiently at me while I open his pouch of wet food. I think I should have called him Nero because he has despotic tendencies!

@owlwings Haha! Mine would probably do that too if I'd capitulate and buy him food in a can instead of dry.

Meow from Huckleberry the Cat, Kitty Blogger. I like to watch the water from the faucet. As soon as I can figure out how to drink from the faucet without getting my head wet, that will be the way to go. Maybe Mephistopheles can figure out a scientific way for cats to do that. Looking forward to the results of that experiment. Sincerely, Huckleberry the Cat

Mao from Mephistopheles! He is now a grown-up cat, having just turned a year, and has discovered that it's possible to turn one's head sideways to drink from the tap but now prefers the water jug on the dining table. This is quite fascinating because it's a glass jug and, if you put your paw round the back of it while drinking, it looks HUGE and seems to be inside the jug!

I have always wondered this. Cats always just stare into space, knock things over, pounce, and jump and miss stuff all the time. I wonder what makes them do these things.

Just too adorable. I would have got the gifts of scratches, even bites, from his highness....as I am not very good a slave. Love the thoughtful mood.

If only you were a telepath, or if there was a device that could translate his meows into human speech you might find your answer.... Though since he is color blind he might be fascinated by his reflection and shadow.

It really is true that cats are curious with a lot of things. I have a cat before and she is curious with our TV's antenna. She thought it was an enemy of a sort she kept on meowing on it like telling it, "Get lost!" She even tries to scratch and claw it. I don't know what runs inside the mind of a cat except that 95% of it is committed to sleeping/napping/feeling sleepy.
