. "I can give or take elephants; I never can find the cheetah-but the zebras captivate me. They'd be one of the few things that would fit if we were lucky enough to live in a world that's black or white."
~ Jodi Picoult
This afternoon while chatting to a mylotter - because we do actually do the back and forth chat with our responding . . . . I wanted to share with him a photo taken on our last Safari of the Zebra's at the waterhole.
Well I was too late in finding the photo but I decided to make it a post in a small little movie of how the Zebra's approach the waterhole . . .
It all starts with the first one that approaches to check for danger - this is normally the most senior of the Zebra's . . . then he sips at the water for quite a along time before a second Zebra that has been waiting in the bush joins him at his side.
This will be a younger Zebra or even a female and she will bow her head and drink at the brown milky water until she is quenched. During this time another Zebra will trust the waters and join them and before long, the baby will approach the edge and move between the bigger of the dazzle and drink until he is quenched too. Only then will the leader wisps them away in a row up the embankment back to the safely of the bush.
We sat there for at least two hours to capture these sightings, just a tranquil afternoon at an African waterhole, were no danger lurked at all.
I dream of such an afternoon again - soon!
