A Small, White Dilemma

Well, our Sunday has just become more interesting! Next door to us live two small, gorgeous but decidedly noisy white dogs: a Westie and a Maltese Cross (the dog breed, not the symbol). Anyway, the Maltese (hereinafter referred to as “Maltesa”) has escaped, and there’s no-one in the house! Now, there’s an alley between our houses, which leads to the park. Naturally, many dog walkers pass through it. Every so often, one of them will knock on our door and ask if OUR dog has got loose – and always with a hint of accusation in their voices! Now, the little one does vaguely know us, but she is wary. We’d bring her in here, but she’d put up a fight and claim to all the world that she was Being Dognapped! Rik’s closed the front gates to keep her in her front garden, but Maltesa’s got loose twice already. We’ve put water down for her, and Rik’s tried to close the gaps she escaped through. She keeps “talking” to the Westie, who is in their back garden and obviously missing her. Oh, well – bang goes any outing for this afternoon! We’ll be too busy looking out for one little white dog who really doesn’t like us very much right now – in fact, you could say she’s barking mad! I hope they’re back by nightfall – otherwise we’ll have to risk our fingers and bring her in here. Come to think of it, she is rather cute…

Oh dear - do the people go out and leave their dogs in the garden? You'd think that if the one escapes, the other would too.

@Vivenda That's not so bad if they can get inside, in fact it's very civilised.

It's not quite as bad as it sounds, Janet. Apparently they have "dog-flaps" so that the dogs can get in and out while they are away. I wouldn't like a small dog to be out alone in the garden, though. And the Westie is noticeably larger than Maltesa whose real name, I gather, is Poppy. By the way, my daughter and I met her later in the day, when she was out with "her" people, and she greeted us like old friends!

It was a great reunion when they finally came home. They'd spent the morning on the beach, and (as they thought) left her in the back garden with the Westie. She's somehow managed to push a fence flap to one side (it closed again after she came out).

@vivenda that's a pain - I might do that for my neighbour's child , but not their dog!

It is good you were there to take care of the dogs while the owner is away.
