I have a strong phobia of snakes. I cannot stand the view even of the photo of a snake. I know that there are a pair in our garden. I do not know where they hide, but they have the habit to change their skin in my rosemary plant. You can imagine how scared I am to go in that area.

In all fairness to snakes, they often do more good than harm. Most likely you have harmless, non-venomous snakes in your garden. And most likely they are doing a very good job of keeping any rats and mice and other bad critters out of your garden and home!

@moffittjc Yes, the two that are in the garden are useful snakes, I only try to avoid them, because I have this snakes phobia. You can find venomous snakes on the rocky sides of the steep hills and the mountains.

@moffittjc My snake phobia is so strong that I'll have a nightmare tonight after reading about serpents. Even living in Ireland where there are no naturally occuring snakes I still check the toilet before sitting on it and look under the bed before putting my feet to the floor.

My phobia of snakes isn't quite that strong, but I do make sure to look under the bed before I go to bed at night, as well as make sure the closet door is shut, so that the monsters can't get me during the night when I'm sleeping!

Snakes are actually pretty cool. I was being funny with my post, I actually don't have any trepidation of snakes whatsoever!

@moffittjc I recall visiting a snake performer in Morocco who invited spectators to have the snake draped around their neck. Everyone seemed to take a step backwards, so I could not resist volunteering.

@Asylum Did you actually step forward and volunteer, or by fault were you the only one left standing there after everyone else took a step backward?

@moffittjc LOL sorry I'm not mocking your phobia at all! It's just how you said that! Made me laugh so much. I feel bad for you though! My Nan HATES snakes also. She can't stand even watching them on TV. She puts her hands over her eyes until it's gone.
ok I suck with this question. I always have because I can't tell if I have phobias or it's actually because of bad experiences.
I do know I have a phobia of spiders. I don't care how big or how small, I don't want it near me!
I don't know if this is a phobia or maybe from me watching too many horror movies as a child, but I've had my moments where I am in a pool and I feel like something is going to pull me under for me to drown. Maybe that's because I nearly drowned as a child though?
I also don't like knives. Well actually I don't mind the knife itself, but I don't like when people around me are holding knives but this is because when I was younger, I caught mum cutting her wrist and when mum and dad had arguments, there were a few times where a knife would be involved. So that's what I mean by not knowing if I would still put these down as phobias or if it's just because I've been traumatised.
So basically spiders is my phobia. And clowns....I don't like clowns.

Snakes don't really bother me, I was just having some fun with this post! Well, they bother me a little bit, but I can deal with them as long as they don't jump out and surprise me! I also have a love/hate relationship with spiders. I don't like them, and would prefer not to ever see them, but I also know that they eat just about every other type of bug, including roaches. Roaches are the worst for me. I totally freak out when I see roaches!
Did you really have a near-drowning episode when you were little? I can see where that would be very traumatizing. As a certified lifeguard, I know all about drowning incidences. It's nothing anybody would ever want to experience.
I'm sorry to hear about the knife issues with your family. That can be particularly upsetting for a child to witness. When I was in college, I witnessed my roommate's girlfriend slit her wrists in the bathroom. It's a sight that still haunts me in my mind to this day.

@VivaLaDani13 When I was 12, I dove into the shallow end of a swimming pool, and hit my head on the bottom. I blacked out and when I regained consciousness, I was laying on the pool deck being attended to by medical personnel. That was a scary time for me, and they said I was lucky I wasn't paralyzed from the way I hit my head on the bottom when I dove in!

Once I was walking down the street with a friend of mine and we saw a snake. We ran after the snake but snake crawled so fast and disappeared in a few seconds. I loved the speed of this scary animal.

They are surprisingly fast when they want to be! I tried chasing a snake once, and I couldn't keep up with it!

I don't think geckos would bother me so much, but it did take me a while to get used to iguanas, which can get up to a meter long or even longer. Now that's a big lizard! lol

Spiders - even tiny ones. In fact, I'm not over-keen on insects, either. I don't mind snakes if I know they are harmless - and we only have one venomous type in the UK.
When I was working for a publishing company, one of my colleagues, who lived in an apartment over a pet shop in the city centre, was joined in his shower by an escaped garter snake one morning. At least that time he had an excuse for being late!

Yes, in truth snakes don't really bother me. Spiders bother me a little bit, but not horribly. Roaches and frogs terrify me though!

I actually like snakes. My brothers used to keep Garter snakes as pets, and I like their smooth, dry, cool skin. People think they are slimy, but they are not. Of course I steer clear of Rattlesnakes, and a snake crossing my path will make me jump, but once I see that they are harmless, I appreciate what cool animals they are.

Roaches are the worst for me. I can handle most other insects, but I totally freak if I see a roach.
