Annual Inspection

My Mum at her 94th birthday celebration.

Well, friends, I shall not be around for the next couple of days. My mother is coming to make her annual inspection! I’m kidding about the inspection bit. My mum is 95 years young and fiercely independent. Heck, she still goes to the gym once a week! She lives about an hour west along the coast from us, and we haven’t seen her for too long a time because of other family problems. It will be great to have her here and spoil her for the next two days. My mother has always made me feel challenged. She started work on the 1930s equivalent of A Level, got her OND Mechanical Engineering during WW2 (and I’ve seldom seen her without a screwdriver in her handbag since) and was on the Board of an electro-plating company at the zenith of her career. Many women rise to greater heights today, but she was very unusual for her generation. The internet has been her Nemesis, however. She’s terrified of it. In a way, we’re quite relieved about this. While her equally successful elder brother was still alive, he was more adventurous in this line, and Rik was always being called in to sort out problems on Sid’s PC! Anyway, must put the finishing touches to her bedroom now. See you all in a couple of days’ time!

How wonderful. Enjoy your time with your mom. What an interesting life. My mother-in-law is 94. She has some health problems. It's interesting to talk to people who remember so much of the 20th century. She also is mechanically inclined but can no longer physically do much of what once came so easily to her.

Hi, @msiduri - I gather you're another ex-Bubbler! My mother had major heart surgery 11 years ago now, which is why she goes to the gym. She was slowing down before, but she's been so much better ever since!

@Vivenda I am indeed an ex-Bubbler. Left in early 2015 before they crashed and burned. Went to Persona Papers. A nice little community which still exists. Glad your mom is doing better. Unfortunately, my mother-in-law is becoming more frail. Her mother lived to 103, though, so I'm sure there's some fight in her.

@Vivenda Yes. It was started by people who were disgusted w/ the Bubble factory (nice name. I'm stealing it.) Enjoy you mom's visit!

She is the same age as my Mom. My Mother is still bossy, she always check if I do everything as she taught me when I was young when she comes to visit. Enjoy your two days with your Mom.

@Vivenda I believe that they still consider us as their "kids" and they feel the need to teach us all the time.

Thank you, Anna. My mother tries very hard not to be bossy - but doesn't always succeed!

How wonderful that she is still alive and well. I know people much younger than she is that are afraid of the internet. Have a wonderful visit.

Thank you, Heather. It really annoys my mum at one level that she can't receive emails, for example, but she's heard about all the hoaxes and scams, and they've got her running scared. Obviously, a healthy caution is always a good thing!

I certainly am! My son came over today and all of us had lunch together in a pub right on the waterfront in Old Portsmouth.

@vivenda Those old girls are magnificent. I know a few who made their mark in a man's world and just keep on enjoying life and poking their noses into everything that takes their fancy. Glorious.

On her own admission, she's not as good at drinking whisky as she used to be!

She is slowing down now, but she still enjoyed her game of Scrabble, for which she insisted on adding up the score. I don't THINK she cheated...

It took me a long time to get used to it, and I still yell for Rik when anything goes wrong!
