Finally, we leave England (don't worry, we'll be back) for #7 in my Favorite Bands Fronted by Women series, The Motels. Led by vocalist Martha Davis, The Motels are an American Music Awards-winning band formed in 1975 in Berkeley, California, and despite numerous lineup changes and a few hiatuses, are still going strong. The group is probably best known for their #9 hit single "Suddenly Last Summer." Their best selling album, 1982's Gold record All Four One spawned multiple hits, including "Only the Lonely," which peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, and expanded upon the band's new wave background. I've dug The Motels since the first time I heard their 1980 single "Danger," which is as good an indication of their new wave sound. The link below is to the official video for the melancholic "Only the Lonely." Enjoy!

@teamfreak16 I like the idea of a woman fronting a band. Whether it is the Go Gos or whoever. There was a lot of that going on in the '80's and boy could they hang.

They did some TV gigs in the UK in the early 80s. As a 19 year old I was rather taken with Martha! The nearest they had to a big hit here was Total Control .

I love The Motels. Only the Lonely is one of my favorites, and I love the video. Goodness the 80s was a great decade for music. Back then, we did not know how good we had it. There was so much out there for everyone. Today, it is very hard to find good music. However, there is great stuff happening in the symphonic metal genre. Unlike other types of metal where vocals (for lack of a better word) consist of screaming and growling, there are many bands with female leads, who sing, and have songs with melodies, and great lyrics. Two of my favorite bands fronted by women in this category are Epica and Lacuna Coil. Simone Simons of Epica has the voice of an angel with the face to match, and Christina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil is amazing. She is also quite beautiful even without makeup.

The 80's rocked, music-wise. So much great music! Christina Scabbia is definitely easy on the eyes, as well as a great singer!
