A 68th Wedding Anniversary

Above is a photo of my parents on their wedding day. They are the couple in the middle. They only vaguely remember the other couple in the photo, even though they were their best man and maid of honor. However, they lost touch with them decades ago. My mother was 17 and my father was 20 when they got married, and he was just out of the Navy. Today they are celebrating their 68th Wedding Anniversary. They are both still alive and they still go out dancing regularly ... although they no longer jitterbug, which they did very well in their youth! My parents now live with my sister and her husband in their large, comfortable home in the Midwest. My Dad is doing quite well, but my mom has dementia. She gets confused very easily, although she still knows who everyone is. Do you know anyone who has been married over 65 years?

No not for 65 years. I know a lot of people who have been married for 50 years. 65 years is a lot of years.

@vandana7 The story I heard was that Granddad lied about his age when they got married cause he really was too young to be marrying my Grandma.

@sallypup - Good for your grandparents for being married a long time, too. So few people make it that long!

Wow - congratulations to them - I don't know anyone that's been married that long. They seemed to get married earlier in those days - my father was 18 and my mother 19.

My parents got to 63 years but Mum was 27 when she married and Dad 23. It is a shame your mother has dementia but good that she still knows everyone.

@JudyEv - I just published another post that contains a photo of what my parents look like today. Yes, it is a shame that my mother has dementia. I know that life seems very confusing to her today.

@JudyEv - Thank you for your insight. I suppose you are right that it might become easier for her when she forgets everything ... although it will be sad for my dad.

@DeborahDiane It is a terrible affliction. Sometimes I think it is easier for the sufferer when they forget everything. Some of them seem more contented at that stage - at least for a while.

I am from India, so divorces were rare in the past, as there would be little by way of alimony, and socially, divorced woman is still a social outcast, at least in middle class society. But trend is changing. Hopefully, for the better.

@vandana7 - When I was a teenager, it was very rare for people to be divorced here in the United States, too. Gradually that has changed. For some women, it has allowed them to get out of abusive relationships. For other people, marriages have sometimes broken up too easily. I guess there are good and bad things to be said about divorce.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who's been married over 50 years Your parents look cute and it doesn't show at all that they were so young! It seems like they were both above 20! The 68th anniversary is a testimony to their true and enduring love

@DeborahDiane exactly, that's what marriage is about. Most of the people can maintain it and to do that every couple has to compromise on their part a little.

Wow! Living together for 65 years. That's awesome. By the way, you have beautiful and handsome parents in their younger years. The photo is so cool. I hope they can remember who were their best man and maid of honor.

I think that my one set of grandparents celebrated 64 years, but she also had dementia, and it was bittersweet as my grandfather was alone at times emotionally in their marriage.

My parents passed this past year. August 30 was their wedding anniversary. They would have been married 64 years. Now all their anniversaries will be in heaven. Happy Anniversary to your parents. I'm glad your mother still knows everyone.
