Look At What My Brother Bought Me!

Look what my brother bought me last night! He came home with it after work. I thought he was just stopping by the grocery store on his way home. I was pleasantly surprised. I have been looking for this plant for quite a while. It's called a Wandering Jew and they are just gorgeous. The picture is a little dark and doesn't do it justice at all. They are so easy to root so I will be clipping off the ends when they grow longer and making more plants. Right now the plant is out on our balcony. It is used to being outside. Once it gets cold, I will bring it inside. I need to read up on the care of it because I have never had one before. Do you have indoor plants? If so, what kind do you have?

That's a big plant, you'll get lots of nice clippings from it. We've got plenty of indoor plants. Basically I "rescued" a mixed planter that a neighbour threw out into the field behind us (about 20 years ago) and brought it into the house. The plants grew and eventually I had to transplant them into a really large floor pot, there is a big kind of spike plant with red on the leaves, its almost 6 feet tall, there are praying hands in there, and peace lilies. But they are on the really large side! And then we have a corn plant which stands over 5 feet tall-it has to be one of the ugliest plants in my opinion. And I've got some African violets and a Christmas cactus as well.

Wow, you have a lot of indoor plants. When you say corn plant, do you mean actual corn or is this just the name of the plant?

It is beautiful. That was very nice of your brother to buy it for you. I don't have a green thumb at all. I have had plants in the past but they never survive.

I think it was nice of him also. He is so good to me. I don't really have a green thumb either but this plant is supposed to be easy to grow.

My green thumb turned yellow, I've had nothing but bad luck with plants lately, even outdoors, it's as if someone has sprayed that herbicide that'll kill all vegetation on the roots of my trees.

Boy do I hope that's all this is here as well @simone10 maybe 2016 just wasn't a good year for plants. Well, at least some of the trees are doing ok but I did lose the oldest Chinaberry I had, maybe they're not meant to live beyond 16 years.

I'm sorry to hear that. I go through spells where everything goes great, then everything wants to die and then back to everything going great again.

Thank you! He really is the best! Do your succulents and cacti do good indoors? I've never seen a miniature orchid. Are they hard to grow?

I'm actually not fond of indoor plants, so don't know much about them. I've never heard of Wandering Jew, I hope it thrives for you.

@jaboUK I love having indoor plants but they seem to attract gnats so I try not to have many. Right now I don't have any at all.

I didn't know that you could grow hibiscus and jasmine inside. That's cool! I really need to get more indoor plants but we don't have a lot of windows where the sun shines through.

@crazyhorseladycx Wow, that is a lot of plants. I wish we had more windows with sunlight so that I could have more. As it is, I'm going to have to be really creative where I put the Wandering Jew when it's time for it to come inside. When do you usually bring your plants indoors...what temp outside?

@simone10 yes ma'am, they do take lots 'f light though. i've got certain areas they do quite well - the back sun porch, livin' room 'n a small bedroom - all 'f which face to the south. ya can grow 'em with one'f those grow lights, so i'm told. i jest aint the room fer such, lol. i've got 5 large hibiscus, a 14 yr ol' jasmine (i keep't pruned to 'bout 3x3'), a bougainvillea, 2 large boston ferns 'n some fuchsia that come indoors e'ery autumn. 'n then there's the smaller pots 'f impatiens'n such....i so dislike spendin' funds'n new plants e'ery year, lol.

@JudyEv Yes they can, especially the older plants. They have a tendency to lose leaves at the base and their 'vines' get sparse.

They really are wonderful, aren't they? My grandmother had one that was really gorgeous and I had a friend who had a lovely one too. I always wanted one but when we lived in Vegas, they didn't have any. I hope it does okay when I move it indoors. They are supposed to be easy to grow and root. Did you water yours from the bottom or the top?

@CRK109 I read online that it wasn't supposed to be watered at the base because of root rot but I wanted to make sure with someone who has grown one before.

@simone10 I believe that I mostly watered it from the bottom although there were times when I got a water spritzer and misted the plant all around if the day was very hot and dry. It did very well both indoors and outdoors.

I think my mom used to have that at my parents' house. I would live to have an indoor plant like citronella,it keeps mosquitoes away.Becauae I have a toddler ,i don't think it is wise to put real plants indoor.I only have artificial flower which I attached on the wall

Looks like a very lovely plant I have those kind of plants in stores before. I think you probably find the information on the internet for the kind of care that it needs. Your brother sounds like he was being sweet to his sister. Not too many brothers would do that for their sister. I know mine would not do that for me.

My brother and I are very close. I am the oldest and he is the youngest. I'm 13 yrs old than he is and I practically raised him. I guess that is why we are so close. When I couldn't work anymore, he asked me to come and live with him. We've lived together for 6 years now.

It is an easy plant to care for. Since we spend 4 months in Florida, we only have cacti and a Cycad in our kitchen window greenhouse. Years ago, I had a jungle! What a nice brother you have!!!!
