I have spent more than 6 years in IT industry and I still recollect my hardships with my previous organisation where the customer was an Australian Bank . I was supposed to attend a conference meeting weekly on the phone and every single day I realized I faced quiet a bit difficulty in understanding Australian accent. May be the reason being that it`s so very different than American pronunciations .
Is it the same for people other than Indians to understand Australians and how far Americans understand Australians well?

If you get a chance, follow the Indian Cricket Team whenever they play Australia Down Under. You'll pick up the vibe in time, no wurries
.
I guess most of the English-speaking teachers in India do not have an Aussie accent. Don't worry, many of my Indian work colleagues here had great difficulty in understanding Aussies - not just the accent either! And it's not just limited to those from countries outside Australia... try getting a South Australian to understand Queenslanders or their accent - it might only be a thousand kms between cities, but seems like a whole other world away.
One hint, as I've mentioned in many of my other posts in years gone by, Australians speak with the middle of the mouth, the English clip out precise syllables using the front of their mouths whilst Americans tend to utilise the back of their mouth.
I pity your having to deal with our banks... I don't like dealing with them either!

Best hearing can be achieved by listening to the Radio Australia, After learning Spanish I miserably failed to listen French and understand. I started listening Radio France. I made a regular habit of it and could get through my oral.
