Do You Like Hosting the Holidays?

Santa Fe, New Mexico

This year I am going to volunteer to host Thanksgiving. My son and his fiancee will be here from Santa Fe for this year's holiday visit. And last year I didn't lift a finger for the holidays, lol. My son in law's mother did Thanksgiving and my daughter did Christmas. Last year my dad was still living at home and things were so confusing and tiring for him, so we all decided hosting here would be too much on the old folks. Anyway, I am not that good a host, I don't think. I plan on cooking most things beforehand so that I can sit down and enjoy the day with my company, so that will make it easier. But I'm just not a natural-born hostess. I try to make things nice, and comfortable for the guests, but Martha Stewart I'm not. I get a little nervous. My mother was always so good at it! I feel like I really pale in comparison. Do you enjoy hosting the holiday events?

It would be the entire Thanksgiving extravaganza including pumpkin pie with real whipping cream

@sol_cee Thanksgiving and Christmas here in the south (US) wouldn't be the same without pumpkin pie!

Hell no I live in a studio flat...essentially one room plus a kitchen and bathroom. If I had a party and nobody came my place would still be too small for me to host in I go to my sisters for christmas...we don't have thanksgiving over here.

I'm sure you are an expert guest lol. What you have is a Boxing Day, which I totally misunderstood for years. I thought it had to do with pugilists

Neither my girlfriend or I have family, so we walk across the street for the community dinner, then walk up to our favorite bar for a couple pitchers.

@CinnamonGrl Its not the before hand things...all that I do but the serving. I wouldn't be able to do the formal events.

I used to love it but haven't done so in years. My neighbor and step daughter usually come over but that's about it (which is fine by me).

Yes I think that's enough. I'm sure I'll end up having fun if I can relax. We'll probably play games and chat.

I love hosting, for the last 10 years I have always hosted Christmas in our home. This year it's our 45th anniversary and it is only two days after Christmas, so we plan to go somewhere alone to celebrate.

It's been our family tradition for probably 30 years to have our big dinner at our house on Christmas Eve. The kids help, but I do most of the cooking...I also cook as much as I can ahead of that day. We might go to our daughter's house this year so our grandson can be there. I've thought about fixing different dishes, but everyone wants the same menu every year! You'll be fine, try to relax and just enjoy being together, that's the most important part anyway.

@CinnamonGrl I've varied it just a touch over the years. My son-in-law is gluten intolerant, so I make two pans of dressing, one gluten-free for him. And a cheese cake since he can't eat the pumpkin and pecan pies. My daughter always makes the sweet potato casserole which is yummy. Do you have certain dishes that everyone likes during the holidays?

I do love gathering the family, we're lucky because unlike a lot of families, we get along great. And it's especially nice when my son and his girl can come out.

I am not good at it at all. I avoid it if I can. Some people are just a natural. I just stress about it too much. My mom was a good hostess and so is my daughter but it's just not for me.

I don't even understand why I get so nervous over this stuff. I mean it's all people I'm comfortable with, my family.

@CinnamonGrl I am the same way though. I can cook for my fiance and I and everything will be perfect. I will invite my children and their families over and I will under cook or overcook things, the gravy will be top thin or lumpy. It always seems to be something .

I do but now I share the joy. My eldest son hosts Thanksgiving, I do Christmas and the younger son does Easter. My daughter has a small kitchen and no dining room and 5 sons so it is not easy for her to host so she helps.

@cinnamangrl I always do Christmas for us and 5 kids and their partner's and 3 grandchildren. I'm not very good at it but it's better than going to their houses where I can't escape to the kitchen when it gets too much for me!

I do, we had our holidays dinners at our apartment last year. My son and daughter in law like hosting holidays, but they were remodeling their house last year. I would like to do it again this year, but not sure yet.

I don't like hosting. But what I did love one year was buying more turkeys then needed and giving them to families on Thanksgiving that was poor and didn't have anything in my neighborhood.
