School Lunch Reform

Does it bother anyone else that schools will feed children processed, sugary foods and then ask them to sit quietly in class all day? My policy is that you are what you eat! I think a school lunch reform is in order but I feel powerless to do anything :( Has anyone lived in an area where they have tried to make food healthier for kids? If so, what was the response by the students, teachers and parents?

I heard of some States that make food healthy by selecting healthy fresh food and cooking it from scratch.

@jreeves1985. The Japanese students are learning life skills to be healthy, work experience and learning how to cook.

This is such a good idea! I wish more schools would implement this. I saw a video where some Japanese school will actually have the kids cook the food! Learning life skills and eating healthy. Win Win!

I always hated school lunches. That is why I never ate them. I always packed my own lunch or just waited until I got home since I had early release. In my high school the only thing they did to make things "healthy" was take away the salt & pepper & get rid of the ketchup. Sadly they took away the only things that made the school lunches bearable to even try & eat.

That's really sad to hear, not eating probably contributes to concentration issues just as much as eating the wrong things. It's sad that students like yourself are forced to do that. What kinds of foods would you have liked to see on the menu at school?

@jreeves1985 M fresh fruits and vegetables for one and foods that are fried or left to sit in their own grease. We always got cups of fruit which were always in that sugary juice and not good for us at all. I would normally pack myself grilled or baked goods for lunch and pair it with a vegetable and a fruit. I loved taking hummus & veggies for lunch.

Unfortunately I think it's about the schools not having enough money for healthier foods. I know how expensive eating healthy is and not everyone is rich enough for that. Schools don't have much money either.

I even noticed that when I was in school not just the sugar content but how over processed stuff, to the point now that I think about it in high school I was happy I never had lunch. It probably wasn't the best idea not to eat during the school day, but the food wasn't that good anyway.

Food is way too processed :/ and often people don't understand that processed food and even "diet" foods are so harmful to the body. So what would you have liked to see on the lunch menu when you were in school?

In most cases its the same crap that parents are feeding them at home.

Sadly, you are exactly right :/ Health food has come leaps and bounds since I started eating healthy 15 years ago so hopefully it will continue to progress and parents will start feeding their kids better.
