Eating Apple Pancakes With A Teaspoon

Nobody was eating the small apple in the fridge, so I tried to make apple pancakes since we have a box of instant pancake mix.
The ingredients listed in the box were: egg, oil or butter, and water.
I used margarine because we didn't have butter, apple juice instead of water since the juice box in the fridge was almost empty, a quarter of the apple sliced thinly because of my mother's dentures, and some cinnamon powder.
I think the mixture stood in the bowl for 10 to 15 minutes before my mother was available to cook the apple pancakes. She's quick because she makes them 5 to 6 inches wide.
I got a saucer and teaspoon to scoop and spread the margarine, sat down, but realized I forgot the fork! But I was so eager to taste the apple pancake, so I just cut out bite-sized squares with the teaspoon and scooped them into my mouth.
Actually, I've also eaten pasta with a spoon before.
Note to self: Add more sliced apples next time.
D o you sometimes eat food with the "wrong" or "improper" utensils at home?
Do you, your family or friends add or substitute other ingredients to your pancakes?
(The picture is blurry and unappetizing because I used my old aging phone because the other one was being charged.)

My kids would rather eat with their fingers than utensils !
We make pancakes from scratch. I am mostly not creative with that, but Hubby will put "special ingredients" in his pancakes when he makes them with the kids . . . like chocolate or white chocolate chips. Lately I have been using coconut oil instead of butter.

we always add raisins, but dried cranberry was the best.
i've also used flavored yogurt drinks before, and instant coffee and milo trying to make it mocha flavored.

I would eat apple pancakes with whatever is handy - spoon, fork, even a knife if pushed!
I have eaten most things with my fingers before now (not usually, but on occasion) but I have never eaten spaghetti with fingers. I normally use a spoon and fork for that (the spoon helps in providing something to twirl the fork against and is also used at the end to finish up any sauce left over).

@hereandthere I forgot about rice. I have to eat that with a spoon and fork. I can use chopsticks but very awkwardly and never mastered eating rice with them!

@owlwings i was really surprised the first time i had to eat rice with fork and knife. it was so awkward. the majority of my family (siblings, nieces and nephews) can eat with chopsticks. that's my worry if i traveled to other asian countries, but i've seen them use chopsticks with one hand and a small ceramic soup spoon in another.

i've never mastered eating a rice with fork and knife.
yes, i could cut and stab the pancake with a butter knife or small bread knife.
i cut out enough pasta to fill the spoon when i ate pasta with a spoon.

just buy a small box of hotcake mix (as experiment) and follow the instructions in the box.
i don't know how to use chopsticks, either, so how did you eat while you were in hongkong?

@hereandthere My boyfriend looked for a food stall that has spoon and forks. I cannot really eat with chopsticks. Even in Hongkong airport, they gave me chopsticks. I was very jealous that time to other people around us who can eat with chopsticks.

i was eating sliced mongo bread with a fork a while ago.
instead of water, i used apple juice, then added thinly sliced apple, but only 1/4 because i was just experimenting. so next time, i will use up the rest of the apple and experiment using dutchmill apple flavor.

i think if you're at home, it's okay not to be rigid. in formal settings or in another country, yes, try to follow the custom, but compromise is also good if the situation/circumstance call for it.
instant pancake mixes always have instructions written on the box and usually it's just add egg, water and butter or oil. you can play with the water (change it to another liquid) and add whatever you want: dried/fresh fruit, chocolate chips, cheese, almond slivers, etc. buy a small box to experiment with.

of course, i can eat with my hands, too, but i will end up not too full. i still prefer at least having a spoon for the rice.
even with sinigang na hipon (shrimp in sour broth) i still prefer to eat with spoon and fork.

@tipay26 what i mean is i'd rather use the spoon and fork to remove the head, shell and tail of the shrimp, than my fingers, so they don't get wet.

Sarap! I think I will cook apple pancakes too (with more thin slices of an apple)!
Substitite ingredients? Oh, yes! I use butter (instead of an ordinary cooking oil), when cooking fried rice. With more garlic, please! I also use malunggay leaves instead of sili leaves for tinolang manok. So healthy!

i noticed that when you let the mixture stand in the bowl for a few minutes before cooking, the pancakes tend to be "taller."
we use pechay in tinolang manok (chicken in ginger broth)

@KnehKnah what i noticed from interacting with other filipino mylotters is that different regions in the philippines use different veggies for the same dish. we use other veggies for sinigang na baboy (pork in tamarind broth)
i should post my experiment using the rice cooker one of these days.

Opo. Because the mixed ingredients are with air na kasi, @hereandthere . And, the longer they remain in a bowl, the fluffier it is when cooked. Yummy!
And yes. We also use pechay for sinabawan (or sinigang) na baboy. Sarap po!

yes, @iam_jauntyjen. i hear that some families won't even eat dinner until everyone's home. but how about you, in your own household, would you carry on that strict and proper upbringing of using correct utensils all the time?

I eat many things with spoons, although I tend to use soup spoons. Less spilling that way since I don't eat at my table but my desk. I thought maybe the batter was too liquidy to fry up well and you were using a spoon because of that.

i ate the pancake using a spoon, instead of a fork.
the pancakes came out spongier because i let the batter stand in the bowl for a while.

@hereandthere I don't add so much to pancakes as I do to other recipes or I just wing it and make up my own with ingredients I have on hand. Maybe I should try pancakes as well.
