How do you feel about loved ones who smoke?

I owe the idea of this post to@ tammys85.
Ok. I was a smoker. Only been free of the evil things for 8 days.
Never really gave much thought to friends and relatives who smoked. As a smoker that may be normal enough.
But I wonder how relatives and friends viewed me as a smoker and if anyone actually was really concerned that I might actually kill myself.
I think im glad that none of my boys smoke or my brother or sister.
I have one friend who I really do worry about and I told him because he smokes more than a pack a day.
Didnt stop him smoking.
Anyway. Friends and loved ones who smoke.
How do you feel about them smoking?
Do you even mention it to them?
Please discuss

My dad smokes but he never listens. Even my son draws him the dirty lungs and tell him how bad smoking is but it all fell on deaf ears. Let's be frank, every smoker knows smoking is bad even without anyone keep telling them and reminding them.
I find one of the things is smokers are really selfish. One is the secong hand smike which is even more harmful to the people around them, then there's the cigratte butts which are even causing the cockroaches cancer, lol!~But above all, they always fail to realize that they are not only hurting themselves but the people who care for them as well, not just the smoke but the concern for their well-being

@saulgoodman sorry but when I said selfish I was making a general statement through observation, not with a condemning tone as like you mentioned, the nicotine addiction there is real.
The ciggies here are already very expensive but yet I don't think just hiking up the price would help. Like what you wrote above - taxation, cigratte companies happy then can sell to make profit, government happy they get loads of money. Let's watch and see if there will be ever any country that would ban it
Even by banning it, the root of the problem is not addressed. Until and unless the root cause is addressed, people will still continue in their bad habits

I have had close relatives who were lifelong smokers, even after developing serious health problems, and did not live to a good old age. They knew the dangers but it seemed just too difficult for them.to stop. I consider myself lucky that I never liked it much and kicked the habit when I was young.

I am glad to hear that you kicked the habit at a young age.
I do wonder why intelligent people just cant quit.
Im a perfect example.
But this time I am stopping.
Into day 9.
Never got this far before.
No cravings and although I have a bit of a wheeze i am confident my lungs will recover a bit.

@saulgoodman You can be proud of yourself. Just take it day at a time. It's a powerful addiction.

No one in my family...even the distant relatives smoke. In fact, religiously speaking, it is strictly forbidden.

Strictly forbidden sounds like a good plan.
The longer I go without smoking the more I realize how bloody stupid smoking is.

@saulgoodman Yes, some of my relatives as well as friends of mine are smoking. Some of them smoke heavily. I tried to persuade them to quit smoking for several times, tell them that it could harm them. But, they seem wouldn't listen. So sad seeing them smoking...

Good for you for not smoking.
Have you ever worried that any of your friends or relatives could die as a result of smoking?
Did you say anything?

My home has very strict rules for smoking. It is not allowed indoors at all.
Only my dad smokes...we have tried many times to make him quit...but if he doesn't want to...nothing we say or do will stop him. So there are rules...if a person wants to ruin his lungs..go ahead..but do not make us second hand smokers. Our health is precious to us.

Our health should be precious to us all.
I think my health is important to me now.
Hope its not too late.
Maybe your dad will be like me and just decide to stop.
Smoking is becoming so anti social that one day it may be that smoking is only
allowed in the smokers own property

Smoking kills people we love.
Lets try and persuade everyone to stop smoking.

@saulgoodman Long time ago my dad was a smoker. He finally got rid of it and it was not easy. But he might not only quit smoking because of the health, but also the family

My husband smokes (not a chain smoker) . I told him many times but I guess, old habits are really hard to break. Sometimes, he smokes inside the baby's room, which is soooooooooooooo annoying even though he smokes inside the toilet it still stinks and the smell lingers not in the baby's room but also in the other part of the house . It jeopardizes the our baby's health too.

It is a really hard habit to break.
11 days for me now without a ciggie and I think I wont smoke again.
The e-cig helps.
Maybe your hubby could invest in one of these things.
Smoking in the babys room is not good.
I think he should not be smoking in the house with any kids present.
He must know its not good for baby.

I used to be the only non-smoker in an office of 12 smokers. It was a tiny office and when they were all puffing away it was a nightmare. I can't believe I was expected to work in those conditions. If people want to smoke, that's up to them. I'm not going to preach at them to stop because that's up to them but I am so, so glad that we had the smoking ban. One of the few good things that the Labour government did for us.

You make an obviously valid point with regard to your office.
Now we need a total ban on smoking outside.
Need rid of these groups of drunks standing on the street outside pubs

@5thHouse
I have noticed in the last 10 days how much more pleasant our house is now it is free from ciggie smoke.
Ciggie smoke pongs things up and I have become more aware of it.
I havent been in a pub since the ban came into force.
My mother was an usherette in a cinema in thr 60,s and early 70,s and clouds of smoke floated above the seats like a grey mist in front of the screen.
It does seem insane now but much of everything else in the 60,s and 70,s seems insane now.
Progress is wonderful.
Smoking needs to be banned outside.
Keep it in the smokers own property.
No where else.
20 quid per pack.
That would do the trick.

I just feel irked by smokers but have learned to keep my mouth shut. As for loved ones... I never loved anyone so much to care for their good habits, or the ones I may feel concerned about, well.... they didn't smoke.

My husband smoked for about 35 years. I was used to the smell, although I never smoked. Now I can't stand the smell, makes my throat close up.
