the other side

November 30, 2016 1:08am CST
One of the reasons I prefer sitting where Quiet Man sits on the bus {which is across the aisle, with a view of what's ahead rather than a wall of blue plasticky stuff} is that the sun rises on that side and affords the viewer a rather spectacular treat at certain times of the year. I could sit further back, of course, but fighting my way past a mob of tetchy passengers when I want to alight is not my idea of fun times. Today I spy a view through grubby bus windows, and beyond Quiet Man, that is a haze of golden oranges in so many beautiful tones. The fields to my left are swathed in the glory of the sunrise, waking up to the promise of a wonderful winter's day. To my immediate right the world outside my window is dark. The sun has yet to reach it and it stumbles about as a big dark blue mass of nothingness. I cannot take a photo of nothingness.

@poppylicious A delightful way to start any day. And don't you think the verb that we use for getting off a bus is so sophisticated and elegant? 'I alighted' is so much more seemly than 'I got off'.

@WorDazza One like to avoid confusion like that by using the verb alight but that in itself may well confuse the issue - I don't smoke.

@xFiacre The beauty of, or total confusion that is, the English language!

yes, it's also nice because the sun isn't hot yet that time so i'd sit there only if it's a short trip.

@Poppylicious our climate is tropical so most passengers go to the non-sun side.

I love it when I get to experience a sun rise on a plane. It's pretty spectacular seeing the sun creep over the horizon on one side of you while the other side remains pitch black

I have never seen that, but it sounds glorious. I'd like to see fireworks from a plane.

@Poppylicious Where we moved to a couple of months ago has spectacular views all over Manchester. Apparently on New Year's Eve, if you go up to the top of the hills nearby, you can see all of the New Year fireworks right across the whole of Manchester.
