Why do people love to gossip?

I know we all want to be updated with the lives of other people. It lessens our loneliness or make us feel like we're in the loop. It's just that sometimes such an undertaking is so time-consuming - not to mention toxic.
Do you like to gossip or stalk people on social media?

Its true that we like to be sociable but as for gossiping about others I try not to get involved. Specially where I live there is a circle of gossipers that do just that most of the day from one house to another talking about the other and to their face they are Friends.
