I like fruitcake, my sister used to make the best, she put a lot of rum in it over the weeks prior to Christmas.
But I have never made it myself (too much work). I make a banana cake and add some glazed fruits in it and spices and love it that way. Not heavy. I just eat a tiny slice at a time.

I love fruitcake. My mom and my oldest sister used to make the best fruitcake. I prefer the dark one over the light ones. I usually buy a small one over the holidays but they are so expensive and not near as good as the ones I was brought up with.

They just taste awful. Here, we have a yearly contest to see who can throw them the farthest.

For me, as a kid, it was those “green pieces” in the fruit cake. They didn't look very appealing. Plus my mom wouldn't let me have coffee with it. Fast forward about 15 years. The first time I went with my husband (my fiancé at the time) to meet his parents, it was Christmas time. His mom offered me a piece of fruit cake. I didn't want to be rude so I accepted a small piece. She served it with coffee. It actually tasted good! I was so surprised! When we got married, we started ordering a fruit cake every Christmas from a bakery in Corsicana, Texas. The company makes excellent fruit cake. Better than the monks! We don't eat fruit cake any more. We can't afford it plus it's bad for my husband's health. Too much sugar might trigger diabetes. He's border line so the doctors say.

I am not sure why it is hated so much. I personally love it. My husband doesn't like most brands , there is only one brand of Fruit Cake he will eat. It is called "Grandma's Fruitcake" that comes from Ohio. It is expensive but my parents always send us one for Christmas. It really is fantastic.

Most people just don't know how to make a proper fruit cake. I've had good fruit cake and bad. It depends on how much effort you put into it.

Fruit cake must be the most misunderstood cake in the world. LOL
I love fruitcake but it truly is NOT a desert cake. Eat it in thin slices with your morning coffee or whatever. It's packed with energy which is exactly the whole point of it anyway, Those doorstop jokes are just jokes because a well preserved fruitcake can last a long long time unlike traditional cakes.
Claxton Georgia has been making and selling fruitcakes since long as I can remember. They make a variety of fruitcakes, not just the one pictured. But I miss my mommas fruitcake. Wish she were here.
