English is not my native language. But I have lead a lot in English and that helps a lot. It has helped me have a better vocabulary in my native language too. And I donĀ“t use a dictionary, unless I cannot understand what a sentence means by the context.

Keep a small notebook with you always and write down words and phrases you want to remember (together with their meaning and an example of use, if possible). The simple act of writing something down by hand is one of the most efficient methods of remembering something because it makes a pathway between the brain, the hand and the eye.
Whenever you have a spare moment, review your words and, when you are able, try to use the words when speaking or writing. You can also make a list of useful words and set a target to memorise and use three or five of them a day.
