FIVE STAR MYLOT POSTS

Won't it be great if every week one Mylot discussion was selected for a five star rating?
A discussion chosen on the basis of subject matter, title, accompanying photograph etc. -- This five star post should not have the number of responses as a criteria - though a reasonable amount should be helpful.
The possibility that one's post could receive a five star rating would encourage improved submissions from members -- but how should we go about choosing that discussion ? Should Admin. make the decision? or votes by members?
The process would have to be very carefully thought out, because let's face it, there is a bit of corruption everywhere and it can raise its ugly head -- even here.
What are your thoughts.

While I might agree that anything which tends to encourage 'quality' in discussions, meaning that they are 'proper discussions' (however one might define that, which, in itself, could be disputed endlessly), could be a good thing, I don't think that singling out any particular discussion on a regular basis would materially contribute to that end.
In the first place, it would tend to make myLot competitive (as @JolietJake has pointed out), which it is not and was never intended to be. Secondly, it would involve some considerable time and effort on the part of Admins and technical staff, even if the choice were made by popular vote. Thirdly, if the choice were made by popular vote, it would inevitably introduce ways in which the system could be biased or manipulated.
In the past, myLot had a 'star rating' system (which rated members rather than individual discussions). That caused so much false competition and was so frequently abused that it was dropped in this version of the program (to most people's relief).
If you want to see what other members consider the 'best' discussions, you only have to look at the 'Hot' and 'Top Rated' lists. You might find yourself disillusioned about the ability of the members, collectively, to choose a 'best' discussion. That would leave it up to an Administrator to make the choice and, quite frankly, the Admins have more than enough to do already seeing that the Guidelines are abided by!

NO, this is not a good idea. I have seen sites that posted "rated discussion" and this caused a lot of envy and all people were unhappy because they thought that the picked up article were pure garbage. This is a discussion side not a competition.

@Kandae11 The "star system" created a lot of conflicts in several writing sites where I wrote before. People said that those who were picked up were always the same because they were friends of the Admin/Owner or Moderator. Some have stopped the practice to avoid disputes.

I think no, this is not a competitive site and that would be competitive. We are just interacting and making friends, no need for rating.

@Kandae11 no but when you give stars people become competitive, it just happens and then feelings get hurt. It is human nature.

I don't know, I rarely use a photo in my discussions-which is by choice. I think that like any discussion, all of the discussions started here are important, and mean something to someone, even if only the person who wrote them. I don't put any stock into a top list, I'm here for enjoyment, not to compete.

We never know. Something like this could be in the works right now.

There was a time when there were ratings and many people left Mylot because of it. Some people were bashed for their posts and got really bad ratings.

@Kandae11 I prefer to not have to rate anyone's posts.

A five-star rating system would be fun but would also entail a lot of work. Have you proposed this idea to the site admin to get their thoughts on it?

@Kandae11 perhaps it is something that can be done at another time.

I think based on other sites I've been on that could have the potential to cause issues.

Although it is a nice idea there are some whose language is not English as a first language and may struggle. It would be quite off-putting. Whereas this way we can encourage those writers to improve their writing skills otherwise it might make them quite despondent.

Great idea even though Mylot may not be the best place to implement it, simply because I see it is more a social media site than a writing site

I like to look at the posts under the "Explore" (up by our names) It shows the most popular, the top rated, the most interesting right down to the latest post and even the posts with no comments... It is all done by admin I'm guessing but I do enjoy checking it out. I see so many more than I would see without looking...

If admin decided which discussion was worthy of the award then there would no doubt be some Lotters who would think that whoever was 'the winner' was admin's favourite (some think that there is already favouritism here and complain about certain users' posts never being removed).
If Lotters decided then it would be more of a popularity contest and that would upset those who find it difficult to fit in here (there are already some here who complain about that almost daily too).
Let's keep it light and a fun place as it was designed to be
