What was the point of the Magificent Seven film?

It moves through the plot all right, but there's not a single thing in it that you haven't already seen in a thousand other Western movies. Also, there's hardly any character development beyond the fact that the 7 come from varied ethnic backgrounds, like to banter, and did things during the Civil War. The Kurosawa film is about a gazillion times better than this assembly line schlock - you get so much more emotionally involved in the characters in that version. I don't see why they even made the new one except to cash in on a known commodity - it had nothing to add to it's source material. but that's just my not very humble opinion. What did you think?

It's another pointless remake made to politically correct sensibilities. At least the original The Magnificent Seven was a western rethinking of Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai.

exactly, the 1960 version was at least a clever adaption. The 2016 version only copies from there. Nothing to see here.

Think about cliche things that happen in Western movies. Then pile together a 2+ hour sequence of them.

I guess I must have very low expectations because I quite enjoyed watching the 2016 remake of Magnificent Seven partly because I love watching mindless action movies where I can enjoy the action without having to use my brain. It was a little boring at the beginning but when the action begins, I just watched it for what it was. It was however a little super long. I wish they could have tighten up the plot a little.

Many would disagree with you. The movie was considered great by some. Not me, but by some.

Why is Hollywood so stuck on this marketing department driven cowardice? It's like they run out of original ideas.
