At what age did you get your first job?

I got my first job at age 18. A full time job in a pub, as a waiter.
I stayed there for almost two years (it was a very nice place to work... also, very funny with very good people), and made some good friends, with whom I keep in touch to this day.

@johnroberts I was 15 too, pumping gas. Horrible job in the depths of winter. Parents made me leave it because too many people were getting murdered in the area.

@xFiacre safety is most important. Great that your parents were looking after you. And the weather element, too. Forgot about that. At least you learned that it wasn't for you.

Full service gas stations are literally a thing of the past. It spoiled us once we had to do it by ourselves. That saying, pumping gas was, a good first job and probably was a good way to to meet girls.

I think I was 16 or 17 when I got a job volunteering in a charity shop. My first paid job, if I recall correctly, was as a door to door salesperson for windows when I was 17. Only part time as I was still at college. That job only lasted a week or so! My first full time job, I was about 21 and I spent a few months working in a factory.
Oh, I forgot babysitting. I was doing that from the age of 12.

@besweet I had several problems with it. One being that I didn't drive and had to rely on someone else for lifts as it wasn't somewhere I could get to otherwise. That person didn't turn up to fetch me. Then there was the fact that people weren't interested, and that I had a boss who didn't like to pay wages. Nor did it help that I was quite shy and not used to talking to strangers at the time!

I would not have liked doing the door to door sales. I imagine that would be pretty dangerous now. And most would not even open their doors.

A carhop? A place like Sonic? Did you wear skates? Carhops make me think of movies like Grease and American Graffiti.

@countryrose Yes it was like a Sonic but we had to go take all the orders ourselves. No, we didn't wear skates even though I wish we could of. It was a lot of fun.

I got my first job when I was 18. I was a bookkeeper for a car dealership. I was only there about 6 months and theyears didn't need me anymore so I went to McDonald's where I worked for 5 years before quitting to go to business college.

A bookkeeper for a car dealership sounds interesting. Those skills you learned were invaluable.

I was 20 and it was a part time job at a calling center. The working environment was great and my coworkers were at similar ages so I enjoyed my time there and made a few friends.
It is positive to experience the working environment as soon as we become adults.
Managing studies and work is challenging though.
I have never worked in a cafeteria or pub, I have terrible memory.
Have you done this job again or it was just a one time experience?

That's nice that you didn't have to work earlier. You could spend your time preparing to teach. It can be a challenge to work and go to school.

I've been house sitting and pet sitting since I was very young but my first "real" job was when I was either 16 or 17. I can't remember since it's been that long! Okay so it was only 10 years ago so it wasn't THAT long ago but it sure feels like it! My first "real" job was working at Mcdonald's and I HATED it! I think I only lasted 3 months.

Interesting experiences are listed below. I rarely read all the response of a discussion. Personally, I could not imaginte to start working being still a child. In my case, I started when I was nineteen. My first job was as a secretary in a hotel for one year. But I didn't really like this job. Since then, I changed several times and went through travel agencies selling and organizing excursions, car hire and in an insurance broker until I entered in the private health system where I started as receptionist and translater.
