24/7

My hubs and I enjoy life! He retired in his 50's and continued to work for a few more years directing programs he created at other universities and private schools. I retired early, too, from teaching. Now we are enjoying being together 24/7, although we have our own time apart for our own interests. He collects antiquities, reads, works out, and lunches with his many friends. I ride my bike, walk, read, and lunch with friends. Together we shop, go to museums, travel, enjoy local sights, play tennis, go out to dinner, see movies, and enjoy the company of family and friends. We are still healthy and neither of us smokes, thank goodness! He has always been the breadwinner, and I the icing on the cake. We are loving retirement. It's a 24/7 permanent vacation! How about you? Are you enjoying the good life, yet, or are you still working? What was/is your career?

Sounds wonderful. I am a graphic designer along with so many other things, a Jill of all trades, I guess you could say. I have worked with the same company for 30 years. My fiance is an Iron Worker by trade but had to stop working after he became very ill a few years ago. His health is improving and is under control now so he is slowly getting back into the workforce. He can no longer do that job that he once did but he does labor work now. Retirement is no where near a possibility for us right now but we have a pretty good life. We enjoy doing almost everything together.

@Happy2BeMe I was doing graphics too before we started a family (I haven't worked in about 12 years - I've been a stay at home mom).

There is no such thing as a retirement for business people like me, I own and manage my own licenced business so I do not go to an office like most people do from 8 to 5. The upside is I work or rest when I like to and all the work I do is for myself and not for some company. The down side is I do not get things like retirement benefits and other benefits provided by law for people who are employed.

@DianneN same here, employers pay for their workers benefits. The system is not so good so most employers simply do not have one for themselves and just hold the money as additional capital, some have private retirement insurance plans that are also notorious for not paying. The peso devalues very fast so you would only get crumbs when the time comes compared to your contribution.

My brother owns his own business, too, and can work on his computer where ever he is. Here in the US, he can pay into Social Security and receive benefits when he becomes of age.

Congratulations! Glad that things worked out and that you are happy enjoying your retirement. Things have worked out not too badly for me too, through effort and providence. I like to spend a bit of my time also in helping needy ones in the neighbourhood.

This photo is hysterical ! That's so wonderful for you guys - and you've earned it! We're not at retirement just yet - but we're working on it . . . not entirely sure that we could make it a 24/7 permanent vacation, but it would be a great goal to work towards. I haven't worked in over a decade now . . . well, I've been a stay at home mom for the kids and that's a lot of work. But before that I was in graphic design. I hope to "work" again soon - but I want to do it all differently . . . and perhaps if I get successful with that, I can enjoy retirement with Hubby like you guys do!

@DianneN This is such a precious time . . . I am so happy to have been able to do this for them, though it's not always easy. Well, we are "older" parents, so actually we are a lot older than most parents who have kids the same age as ours . . . so retirement really isn't too far off. I just have to hussle about doing my part now . . . my gears are going . . . to help make a comfy future for us!!!

I was a stay at home mom, too. Those were the most important years and job I ever had. I loved every minute of it. I know you are doing a wonderful job raising your kids, too. Of course, with three young kids, you are nowhere near retirement, but I know that you will eventually enjoy a very happy and comfy retirement, too, once they are all out of college and grad school.

As you know we are retired. I haven't worked in 15 years, I quit work when my sons were in 5th and 6th grade. I was a baker for a grocery store when I quit work. My hubby retired at the age of 58, he will be 61 this Sunday. My husband worked for the State of Illinois for 37 years working with special needs people. It was a brutal job as these people were mostly very low level special needs and many had abusive behavior towards themselves, other special needs people and the staff. My husband is a quiet gentle man and was awarded for his compassion at the job 3 times by the parents groups. Not an award they gave often. Mostly we like to hike, fish and camp. I like to spend money, at yard sales, and thrift stores and resell on ebay. I don't do it for the money I do it for fun. My hubby builds things. We have been offered tons of money for the furniture in our house. But he only builds for us. Winter is tough but that's life,.

I know you are retired, but didn't know the details. How very interesting, especially about your husband. I, too, worked with a variety of special needs students for most of my career. I was nominated for Teacher of the Year a few times. I dislike the limelight and paperwork it entailed. You both have very interesting hobbies! I hope you both enjoy a long and healthy retirement!!!!

I do anxiously await the day when I can fully retire. However, will I ever really want to do this, probably not. I would prefer to work a few hours a week as long as it is doing something that I enjoy doing. My work as a personal care attendant is rewarding, but can also be rough on the body. I have suffered a few injuries from doing something as simple as mopping a floor. I worry that I may injure myself and not be able to continue working, so I am very careful. My husband is a laborer with a concrete plant that makes parts for buildings and bridges. I really don't know how he does it. He comes home filthy and often times exhausted, especially in the heat of the summer. He has quite a few years to go until he can retire. I hope that he doesn't injure himself to the point where he can't work, but that is always a possibility with his line of work.

@DianneN I wash his clothes separate from mine. I made the mistake of washing them together and ruined some of my work shirts and pants. Because they are so filthy I have to soak them for at least an hour. Often times I start them in the morning and let them soak til I get home and then wash them. They get 2 rinse cycles too.

@DianneN - I am fully retired and enjoying every minute of it. My husband has always loved his career as a stock analyst and investment advisor and has a number of loyal, caring clients. Like you, he has always been the primary breadwinner and I've been the icing on the cake. However, my husband now gets out to play golf or go to the gym several times a week, meets friends at the coffee shop, etc. We love our retirement community! He does have a number of health problems, and has some bad days, but we are taking things one day at a time. Neither of us smokes. I think we love our life and have a lot of fun.
