Generosity of ATM.

There was a news items this morning. One of the ATMs (Automatic Taller Machine) started showing generosity yesterday. When a person pressed for Rs.1000/- he was paid two currency bills of Rs.2000/- each (instead of currency bills of Rs.500/-) and thereby he got four times the money he demanded from ATM. He got much pleased and informed others, others also started withdrawing money from that particular ATM. Till the bank officials could know about the error, Rs. 7 lakh were already withdrawn from the ATM. Although, the culprits will be identified through their Debit/ATM card details and CCTV footage, yet it caused lots of problems and embarrassment for the concerned bank. If it had happened with me, I would have informed the bank on the first occasion. I would like to know what would you have done in this situation. Were you ready to accept excess cash paid by ATM and would have gone home without informing anyone? Image courtesy - Google

Yes, it is prudent to inform the bank if ATM is giving excess money because bank officials will come to know about it later or sooner.

Same with me - I'd also inform the bank of the error. The bank though, as you said, can trace to whom the ATM over-dispensed with cash and will accrodingly make a corresponding debit to the accounts concerned unless they are already insufficient, in which case, the bank will communicate with the concerned clients.

What you have stated is correct. In any case of excess withdrawal, bank will trace you, so it would be better to inform bank officials.

@sunrisefan Great to hear that you used to work in a bank. Did you come across any similar incident, when you were in bank?

Since it is a bank, I would be too scared to just take that money freely. Surely there would be enough evidence through the card numbers and the security camera that I'd be caught - and I wouldn't want to get in trouble for it (even though it was the technical error of the ATM). Yah, I'd try to inform someone at the bank about it for sure. That being said, I was at a pay phone during my teen years. I put the coins in but I somehow could not make my call. So I hit the phone. Then a bunch of change came out. I hit it again - more change came out. I hit it again and again and again . . . and I did grab all that change - but then I realized I should stop. I left, but I could hear the people behind me started hitting the phone next .

You are on the dot that the customers who withdrew the excess money could easily be identified (and later asked to return money) through their card numbers because ATM machine keeps the record of cards. Also, most of the ATMs have Close Circuit TV Camera, which record moment of each customer, so those CCTV cameras would also help in identifying the culprits. I know you are very honest and you would immediately inform the bank officials about this kind of error. The incident you narrated about pay phone machine is very interesting. As a teen you would have got tempted to collect as many coins, as possible from the machine, till your mind asked you to stop it. Do you remember what did you do with excess money?

@much2say Yes, you could understand that no ATM offers more then what you demand, so if it is giving excess cash and you are pocketing it, it is a kind of cheating. I know that you were an innocent kid and you took the change from machine in all your innocence. Yes, you would have used it at other pay phone machine to make some calls but you would not eaten chocolates with the excess coins?

@dpk262006 It's one thing when it is an innocent mistake through no fault of your own. But when you see the mistake and take full advantage of it - that's when you could find yourself in serious trouble. It could be seen as stealing at that point. Oh goodness - I was just a kid - it was a lot of change, but probably only a handful - it's not like I was able to fill a backpack . I probably used it at another pay phone machine to make that call .

It's nice to get free money but being the bank , obviously they will be back fracked so it's not worth it. I'd notified them and get it adjusted.

Yes, the joy of getting excess money would be temporary only because in our heart of hearts, we know that it is illegal money and sooner or later bank will find us.

@infatuatedbby Yes, they maintain our accounts, so they could debit the money any time from our account, if we do not return the excess cash. Problem could arise, when a customer has less money in his account than he got in excess from ATM.

@dpk262006 Yeah the bank will find us later, if not they'll just deduct it since it is their money.

It sounds great as money can come easily. But actually it is not. There is a similar case happened here. An ATM went wrong and it kept giving money when I man came to withdraw cash. As you can imagine, at that time this man was greedy and of course it was not easy to resisit money. He took the money. Finally the bank found it and then this man was put into the jail at last. Somewhat I sympathied to this man because what he did was very normal for human beings. It would be fine that he returned the money. He didn't damage the machine and the ATM just went wrong at that time. It is not his fault. He was just unlucky.

His greed took him to jail. He should have shown honesty rather than greed and would have informed the concerned about the error in ATM.

It was certainly a technical error, which resulted in excess money. What would you have done in such a situation? Would you have informed the bank at the earliest about the error?

To me that is stealing. I would tell the bank at the moment I knew it was happening. Their trail will be on the machine and will have a pay it back anyway...I'm guessing.

Yes, you are right that it will be a kind of cheating, therefore, it would be better to inform the bank about the technical error, rather than pocketing the excess money.

@JudyEv Ha ha ha .....you are so right that the moment we get some extra money (which we did not expect) we start thinking how and where to spend it. If by chance we have spent the money which was not ours, it will get difficult to return it.

Yes, they will come to know sooner or later that you have taken excess money. ATMs run on a programmed automatic system and it is not difficult to trace the customers, who take away excess money, in case of an error. I know that you are very honest and you would not only inform the bank officials but would return the excess money to bank.
