Thanks for my free car, Lexus! And thank you, Takata, the manufacturer of airbags in many cars, including Lexus and BMW.
We bought a Lexus last March to keep in Florida, since we fly back and forth, and need a car to get around. We keep three in our home state of Connecticut.
Shortly after our purchase, we received a recall notice. The passenger front airbag was faulty.
Takata, the airbag manufacturer, still hasn't figured out how to repair the airbags. It's been a long time.
My husband called Lexus. He was very aggravated. Lexus gave him a free car to keep until Takata figures out a way to improve their airbags. So we now have two cars to drive in Florida.

That's good that they gave you a free car to use. =) They should figure out the issue or I would imagine their going to lose a lot of money.

@DianneN They would be losing more if they did not do the recall because, eventually, people would know about the defect. With the recall, they will earn the goodwill of customers like you who will keep their trust in the company and continue to patronize them.

@sunrisefan I'm not so sure. We are in the market for a new car when we go home. If this matter isn't remedied, we may look for a different brand. It's too bad, too, because we looked at cars in the showroom and saw the one we would most likely buy at home. I didn't think to ask about the airbags in it. However, the company is doing everything they can for its customers. I commend them.

That is awesome of Lexus to do, they sure know how to keep their customers happy!
I am curious if other customers are upset and if they provided them a free car to use too? It'd be a lot of loaner cars then? I guess it depends on the person you get! :)

@DianneN Wow! How did they find all those cars to sponsor people to drive? Maybe had to have them rent cars and cover the expense. I don't think my Lexus even carries 1,000 cars on hand for loaners.

@infatuatedbby The wise people, like my husband, contacted Lexus. This dealership sits on 18 acres and isn't the largest one here in FL. Most cars were rented and Lexus is footing the bill.

Well done you, I am still driving around with the killer airbag on the passenger side, until we get back to Connecticut.

@DianneN It is a Takata issue but we bought the car used. I have thought about getting it fixed here but the dealership has a service department with not so great ratings.

@BelleStarr I don't see what being used has to do with anything. If Takata messed up, you are in danger. I would check with a dealership for the heck of it. You have nothing to lose, and a car to gain.

When I come to visit you, we can race your two Lexuses (or would it be Lexi?). You drive one, and I'll drive the other, and we'll see who can get to the bar first!

@DianneN In addition to a race, we might also need to put a friendly wager on who will make it to the bar first!

Wow that must have been cool news! Do you like this new car better or your Takata? Right after I got my 2002 Honda mini van in 2013 there was a recall on the airbag assembly in the driver's side I believe. It only took them an hour to fix it at the dealer.

That's pretty cool! Except one of the cars you can't really drive because it's a safety issue if the airbags aren't working properly..

@DianneN That doesn't seem totally safe.. I suppose you'll be using the free car mostly for your running around?

@katsmeow1213 Yes, my husband will. He has to drive 30 minutes three times a week for his therapy and back. Why put the mileage and wear and tear on our car? Besides, we will use it at Costco and shopping. Less chance of dings on ours. Lol!

That happened to me too - recall of the passenger side airbags! It was a bit of a hassle to schedule all that . . . but in the end they took the car in until the airbag parts or whatever came in . . . and in the meantime we were able to take from the dealer the newest version of my car! I think that lasted a couple weeks. I got my car back and was just happy that was done and overwith. But guess what we got in the mail not even a week later . . . a recall notice for the driver's side .

@DianneN You're right the recall had been going on for months. I think I first was told about it when we took my car in for an oil change or something earlier last year. But we didn't want to deal with it at the time. We had a friend who said she had a replacement car for 2 months already . . . she kept calling daily to see if they got to her car and finally they did, but she thinks it was because she bugged them. I think they didn't want anyone to be driving around in the cars with the old air bags because they didn't want to deal with any more law suits . . . giving the replacement cars or a rental was better for them. They kept calling me wanting to schedule the car switcheroo and I didn't want to deal with it . . . until summer when I didn't have to be anywhere on daily routine. It was barely a couple weeks wait after getting the "new" car, so it wasn't too bad of a wait. And yah, we didn't have to pay either. We were lucky to have gotten a car from their lot rather than some funky rental (which I know from before would have been paperwork hassle on top of having to go to the rental places at/by certain times).
I think it was early December I had to get the brakes done . . . and by then I had forgotten about the second recall . The guy told me since I was doing that, they could also work on the airbag recall . . . and I'd still get my car back at the specified time (because I had to pick up the kids from school). I couldn't believe it would be done just like that - the other time they had to wait for the airbags/parts to come in. I was offered a free rental car because of the recall . . . but what, for less than 2 hours? No thanks - not worth the hassle - so I just walked home and came back. Glad that's all done.

@much2say Wow! What a story. At least it's taken care of. They definitely don't want lawsuits on their hands on top of everything else.
I've been responding in bits and pieces. My granddaughter was practicing her figure skating routine and the other grammy was texting me videos. Now we are gabbing back and forth. Lol!

Really! This recall has been going on for months and months, but of course, our car is kept in Florida and we never thought about it until my husband was looking through his paperwork. He called the dealership and there is no way Takata can fix the problem, yet. They gave us another car and let us keep ours. We looked at new cars while we were there, and found one we love, but will look at a couple of other brands when we get home. I'm not sure if the new Lexus has the same airbags, and didn't think of asking. I'm so duh at times. I think it was because my husband didn't blink an eye at the price. Believe me, he studied every word and number on the sticker. So was your driver side airbag fixed?
