I was saving for a new computer, but now I will be saving for a used car.

I can't afford to buy a new car but, hey, a few thousand should get me a fairly good used car right? Meantime I will be learning to adjust to walking and taking the bus for a few or maybe even several months as it takes time to save for a car even a used one, when you don't have a dime to your name. lol But I will learn to adapt. repairpal said it would cost 700 bucks to just replace the radiator. It seems that some sediment has invaded the cooling system of our Caddy Lack. It started running hot a few weeks ago. I ignored the warning signs, of rough idle and temperature readings up to 225 or more and smoke from the oil leak being more pronounced. It turns out the radiator itself sells for under 50 bucks, but to have a mechanic take the old one out and put the new one in, and also flush out the old radiator coolant from the engine and the entire system including the heater core, would indeed cost as much as another vehicle. It's not working for me. I tried spending several hours watching tutorials on YouTube about replacing the water pump, replacing the thermostat, doing some pressure tests and checking to make sure the fans turned on at a certain temperature. A friend of mine did replace the thermostat and the old one and it's housing was covered in scale and dirty black yuck. After he replaced the thermostat, which by the way costs about 20 bucks as a failsafe that remains open instead of closed, the system now has air in it for sure because he did not purge the air from the lines after putting back the coolant. The engine ran for 10 minutes at idle speed yesterday and the coolant temperature rose to an all time high of 240 degrees. I stopped the engine, as it was not only way too hot but even with the heater running full blast, I knew there had to be some blockage in the cooling system somewhere that is preventing proper flow. I told him I was concerned I warped the heads but he said I probably did not but the fact is, we have to run more tests to see where the blockage is if there is any and the water pump is clean and is not leaking and the belt to the pump is good. so all that said, I know the purge line was not checked, the air was not purged either from the system and also the engine has been running rough ever since before he replaced the thermostat. He did tell me that the old thermostat was stuck in the closed position. This must have been closed a long while and we drive only very short distances so the highest the engine ever got was 225 no higher. My guess is the engine and radiator have to be flushed out and since the radiator is aluminum it will not require replacement, only the lines that carry coolant to the northstar engine which is the kind our SLS has in it, are very thin and could easily have trash buildup in them preventing flow to the engine block, and if I don't even drive it another day I probably did some damage to it by driving unaware of a problem. The dashboard information center should have told me I had an overheated engine but it did not say anything, I had to run the list to check it myself and noticed the temperature of the coolant to be upwards at 230 yesterday at the Walmart. I think it would be more practical to replace the cadillac sls with a Toy O Ta at least that would be cheaper to keep 'er.

It may actually take over a year to save up. meantime I have insurance to pay and will not be able to update the tags for it in spring due to it's being broke. Oh well as long as city services don't bother me about it being in our driveway waiting to get fixed. They act like we are made of money. I am certainly no Trump nor Oprah. Nor Gates I am dirt poor.

@lookatdesktop I think you can still register the car as non operational and it'll be like $30-40 instead of the usual couple hundred, well depending on your location that's how much its here. You may want to look into it. When tags are up and overdue they charge like every week for being late. States might vary but you can ask how it works.

You really put across the reader the intricacy of the problem with your car and you did it will that I now conclude that your radiator problem is a big headache. I hope you can save up for the repair or for the purchased of a used car as you are thinking of. Meanwhile, taking public transportation would be the best option.

I can say that I am at least lucky to have had many years of past experience with public transit. The thing that I disfavor with buses that is, DART buses, The drivers are rude and drive way too fast and don't wait for you to get seated before driving fast and making swift turns. You must hang on tight.

@sunrisefan And I am one of those who is pretty sure footed but still a bit uneasy on one of those public buses. DART is what they call it here in Big D. Dallas Area Rapid Transit. I take them literally. lol

@lookatdesktop Same here with the big buses in our country. They seem to be always in a hurry and not minding the safety of their passengers, especially the older ones.

Walking and taking the bus can be interesting and for course a good exercise. As long as it's not too cold outside.

@lookatdesktop I find it convenient too. It's great that you like it, this way it will be easier for you to adapt and have pleasant rides until you save enough for the car.

I used to ride the bus all the time. I kind of liked it. That way I didn't have to drive, didn't have to worry about getting a speeding ticket and can text all I want on the bus. Its a win-win.

@lookatdesktop You avoid so many expenses with the bus. You don't have to spend on gas, parking, tolls and avoid possible accidents. The only issue is that you might travel in a crowded bus or wait in the cold for the next bus to come. I see you are from Texas so you probably have the opposite problem with very high temperatures in the summer.

Yes. I know. I have owned so many in my life. All used. Never new. I spent bookoo bucks on them all and they eventually ended up at the auto park. lol

You are making a good decision by buying a car. Till you save up just keep taking the bus and you will get there sooner than you think so just keep working hard.

thank you so much for the optimistic approach. I will do just that. I can't give up. There are many days in my younger years I was happy without one of those 4 wheelers. ya know.

I have not explored all of the possibilities. Maybe I can even get a ride to a Walmart on a bus. That way I could just go get the things I need one weekend, then take a bus ride back home. The local supermarket is just a few blocks to one mile from my home. I can walk it easy.

Look at it this way, - you'll be getting some exercise before your car arrives.

Yes. I will indeed. First my computer crashed. Then I downgraded back to Windows 7. Then I developed a tooth abscess, that got better with home grown medicines, and now after almost getting over that pain, the bottom falls out from under our old 95 Seville. It is a pretty car on the outside but shows definite signs of decay on the inside. lol
