when your 8 year old granddaughter learns how immigrants helped make the US great on the same day the Administration works to limit immigration.
My ice princess learned what life was like in Russia and Ireland in the mid 1800s to the early 1900s in school.
Russian Jews were persecuted and the Irish had the potato famine. As a result many people left their homeland to start new and better lives in America, often learning a new language, attending school for the first time, and working at a very young age to earn money.
'Nuff said.

The Irish Potato Famine was horrendous. What most people who condemn immigrants conveniently ignore (or are possibly just too stupid to realise) is that they themselves, and everyone they know or have met or ever will meet is descended from someone who was originally not native to their country.

Truth be told. I am mortified at the way things are going. What do you tell the children now?

@suziecat7 Sadly, I agree, unless some little boys grow up to be better than what we have future leaders.

The trouble is many current immigrants aren't doing the same things the old immigrants did. Back then immigrants appreciated the opportunities they had here. Many would change their names to something more American sounding. They'd change their customs, learn our language, work hard at whatever sort of job they could get.. often something much more demeaning than what they were used to in their own country... but they appreciated all of that, and did it willingly. These days immigrants want us to change our rules, customs and policies to suit them.. every business must have interpreters of all languages as immigrants won't learn English.
I don't expect them to give up their own customs.. but they need to respect ours. They don't have to change their name or stop speaking their own language, but I do think they should make the effort to learn English.
Just some of my thoughts..

It is like our prime minister. He has a set of rules for himself and another set for the citizens.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Yes, indeed. Time will tell, but I don't have very high hopes.

Back then, the immigrants did it the right way @DianneN . Nowadays, they can be here for 40 years and still don't know English.

@DianneN I know some German, French and Bohemian. Took 4 years of Spanish in high school (good thing). Have had to refresh my Spanish though since half my neighbors are Mexican.

@nanette64 Living in Texas, I'm certain you need to know Spanish. Very impressive! I took French in high school, then a college course before we went to Paris our first time. It came in very handy. I also know some Yiddish and Hebrew. I don't have a good ear for languages.

But the difference is that they assimilated themselves into the American culture. Now, they want a whole country to change, to accommodate them.
Then there's that whole problem of terrorist wanting to come over and do terrible violence against the US, just because it's the usa.

@DianneN - like ive said before, I have no problem with people coming over to better themselves, but I do have a problem with those who only come here to commit crimes.
People shouldn't be mad for getting caught being here illegally, they knew what they were doing,

So many of us are immigrants or children of immigrants. Funny, even Trump seems to forget where his family is from! Most writing here are not descendants of the natives. What are people thinking?

Each leader (of every country) makes rash promises, then quickly implement some of the policies they hold dear. They don't seem to think the consequences through. The electorate is also to blame....they never seem to truly hold their leader accountable for their actions. They are also easily swayed by promises made.....

My people came from Germany, I know this country is all about immigrants and I sure agree, unless they are here illegally they need to do it in a legal manner.
