Skirt to Tank

Simplicity 1614

I learned to sew a few years ago by making my quirky thrift store finds fit my body better. Eventually, I started making clothes by using patterns. That doesn't mean I no longer hit the thrift store; it's actually the opposite! I find great pleasure in going to the thrift store and allowing myself to focus even more on the unique fabrics and textures. This tank was originally a skirt. It had a large hole burnt in it that was probably why it wasn't selling. I loved the fabric though. Floral but not too feminine. I wanted a top with some shaping and interest. Simplicity 1614 was perfect.with the front yoke and the back cut-out and center seam. I really like how it turned out and this is a pattern that I will definitely make again.

How very clever. More people could do this and save money.

Saving money and having the pleasure of knowing that no one else has a garment just like it are what keep me going!

Love the top! I have to get my machines out and see which one is working. I have 4! Haven't used them since months before we moved. I think that a couple may need to be repaired.

@AranciataRoss I am not sure there is one around here. I have seen one in the next state over from us. The drive will be about 30 minutes and then the cost of the repair.

Thank you! Oh my!! I just gave away a machine so I'm down to two sewing machines and one serger (which I have yet to use). Where do you take yours for repair? I haven't ever needed to but I have no idea where to look if I did because sewing machine repair shops aren't really a thing here.

@ElusiveButterfly hmmm. I should probably look it up just in case I ever need it.

That is just amazing that you made this from a skirt. I love the fabric and also the pattern, you did a wonderful job. I hope to have the time some day to sit down and learn to sew, I have a machine.

Thank you! Some people meditate, some people run, I sew. I hope you do have the time to learn. I find it extremely relaxing- even when it's frustrating!

Thank you for your compliment! I really loved the fabric but couldn't use it as a skirt.

I used to make almost all my clothing, but haven't in awhile. That's one more project I'd like to do again.

This is really nice you did an excellent job! I wish I was better at sewing. I think it's awesome that you took what I literally would have thrown away and made it into some cute and fashionable.
