Morning exercise by walking to work!

We moved to a new office space this month, and the building is at the top of a hill. It has great view and clean air but I have to climb almost 200 stairs to work everyday! I am thinking of it as my morning exercise. Usually I have to take a break between the stair sets but I am improving gradually and now I can reach the office with less breaks. I don't have an alternative because I don't drive and there is no bus route convenient for that area. The only problem is that my take away coffee gets cold by the time I reach the office! Is your workplace easily accessible? Do you ever choose to walk instead of taking other means of transport? This picture was taken this morning during my break! It's the two last set of stairs before reaching the top!

@BelleStarr So you needed about 2 hours on the road every day to reach your workplace and come back home? It's a long ride, especially the return must have been difficult.

I am exhausted when I reach the office too! I have to take the elevator for the first floor! Fortunately I am carrying my coffee because there are not any coffee shops up there. So I don't get sleepy usually!

Almost there. It's a good exercise for you. We all need a little cardio. Bad for the coffee, though, as it turns cold.

@Beatburn There is one coffee shop up there that makes terrible coffee and it's very expensive! I do some stretching at home every day but we don't have personal space to do it at work. Stretching is a great idea actually, so I will try to find a way. Thank you!

This is usually my intermediate stop in the picture. I still have the pink stairs and the other set of stairs above the street which is the last one! I am looking for a coffee mug that will keep it warm until I reach the top! I timed my route on Friday and I am already getting faster!

@besweet Good. Don't forget some stretching exercises to help the circulation. There are containers that keep drinks warm. Or better yet, get coffee once you reach the top?

When I lived in Monte-Carlo, we had a very similar stair from the main road to our apartment building. Not 200 steps, but 160, but they were high steps. I had to stop several times.

My boss says there is a shortcut with one less set of steps (maybe 25 steps less) but I still have to walk uphill! Did you see a difference in endurance with all those steps? The view Monte Carlo must have been amazing if your building was high!

@LadyDuck You probably got used to it then. Monte Carlo must be an amazing city to live. Walking helps us stay fit and healthy. When I see all those steps in front of me, I am thinking that I will have thinner legs by summer.

@besweet The whole city of Monte-Carlo is up and down, you are all the time climbing steps or going downhill. No I have not noticed a difference in endurance, because in the beginning I was younger. We lived in that apartment 27 years.

That's a good cardio exercise. I'm sure it will get easier for you as you climb it every day.

It is getting a better every day indeed. Some days are better than the others, depending on how much rest I had the previous night.

@JudyEv The steps are inevitable! I can take driving lessons! Lol Thank you for the mug idea, I will do some research and see what's in the market. I think I have seen people carrying those mugs in the subway.

@besweet You need an insulated coffee mug with a lid. Not sure what you can do about the steps though. :)

Well, one of my work places is my home but I do live in an upstairs flat with 18 steps to access! I also work as a tutor so go to people's homes for that. I could walk if I didn't have to drop my son off at school first. Then my other job is as a personal assistant where the main part of my job is driving so I couldn't really walk to work for that one!

It sounds like you are active, those 18 steps are a good workout if you go up and down a few times per day! If I had a choice, I would walk after working hours. This morning stair climbing makes me exhausted before I even start the day!

It's a good morning exercise but make sure you've something as breakfast.. a banana would do. We have 2 blocks in our office and I work in the second interior block. We've bicycles near the entrance, so we can pick one and ride to second block. I used to either cycle or walk to my block..

Your company must be very organized! I like cycling too but I don't have a bike in the city. Thank you for the tip, I am having a full breakfast because I wake up feeling hungry every day!

Every now and then, when I missed the bus, I would walk home from school. That was pretty hard, though, because I had all the textbooks and my fairly large instrument. If it weren't for my bassoon, I probably would've been much happier doing it

How long was your distance? Carrying weights or large items can only make the walking harder. I wouldn't mind to walk casually but I am usually running late so I can't take longer breaks and enjoy the view.

@libster Oh ok. It's a long distance! Usually I don't mind walking the same route every day but I would be a little bored after the first 15 minutes. Unless the surroundings are interesting, but still, if you walk on the same road every day you stop noticing all the details.

I have to go from the stairs so it's my only choice. I could follow the car route by walking but it would take too long. It's going zigzag around the hill so the stairs are much faster.

I think's it's a great idea! why not? I do this everyday, I prefer walking as much as I can, to work or collage, I think I walk an hour a day. this is not much but better than nothing. And I like my coffee hot that's way I make one at the office :)

I like my coffee hot too! But I am terrible at making coffee. Walking one hour a day is great, people who choose to walk every day have benefits to their health. This is a 15 minute uphill walk one way, and I still have to take some quick breaks every 5 minutes!

I really admire that you walk to work every day, especially with all of those steps to go up! I bought a bike to commute to work with a while back, and I have yet to encourage myself to get a little exercise and actually ride it to work. Also, a Yeti, Artic, or similar cup should keep your coffee from getting too cold as quickly.

@ocwjay It's getting a little easier every day, sometimes I change the route a little for variety! Be careful with your bike, sonetimes the car drivers don't pay attention to the cyclists. I hope you have special road lines just for bicycles in your state. They are much safer and you can enjoy your ride without dangers.

Thank you for the mug suggestion! I don't have another choice except from walking at the moment, it is enjoyable until I get tired near the top! There are many people who have bikes in the city. It's too cold for it at the moment but it's a great way to move around when the weather is good.

@besweet You're very welcome! I can understand not wanting to ride a bike when it's cold. Not something I usually think about, as I live in a southern state that doesn't really know what the word "winter" means. I wish you luck in all of your walking, and I hope reaching the top of the steps gets much easier for you before long!

after I saw, I thought you can use a bicycle, it turned out that it was difficult to ride a bicycle, I usually used a motorcycle or a car, because I didn't have a bicycle

A motorcycle would be convenient, since there was a big parking issue in that area. Now I also drive to work since we relocated to another country. Is your workplace close to home or you have to drive a long distance?

Wow a lot of stairs I always drive myself to school because it's not allowed to walk in highway lol but I wish I could walk more and not always use my car. It's better to lose calories than money for gasoline and beautiful picture!

It definitely saves me some money. I wouldn't walk either if it was a highway. But this route is between old buildings and trees so I don't mind. I choose this set of stairs because they are colored and I find them interesting. There is a parallel street with similar amount of stairs but they are not colorful.

@besweet its a very innovative way to workput sir. I come a fitness background , so i love these ideas and moreover the will to modify the daily life to include workouts in them. Takes a lot of courage and enthusiasm to do this everyday. Hats off sir!! You can maybe put on some ankle weights and maximize the workout!! Congratulations on your new office space.

Thank you! I work in a small firm so it's not my own space but it is a great location with a beautiful view. As I become stronger, it is easier to climb the stairs. I am still exhausted when I reach the top! The ankle weights is a good idea for the future, I should find a discrete dedign to fit with skirts though! Do you exercise regularly? What kind of workouts do you prefer?
