Why is Ground Hog's Day So Important

Yesterday was Ground Hog's Day. It is a point on the calendar, six weeks from spring. The idea is that if the ground hog sees his shadow we're in for another six weeks of winter. And if he doesn't, spring will come early.
I don't know if you realize this or not, and I didn't until a couple years ago. Spring happens on March 20, every year. It's arrival from the first day of February is six weeks. It doesn't depend on a ground hog on whether it shows up or not. Though this year a delay would be nice, since I think spring held winter hostage and decided to throw warm temps our way throughout the winter months and the result is the flu and colds everyone seems to be experiencing.
I know a lot of you are hoping for an early spring to get rid of the winter dole drums. Me, since spring has held winter hostage, am hoping that her smug nature will allow winter to breathe on us and delay spring's arrival by at least three months.
Oh okay, how about a month then? No? Can I at least have one blizzard then in spring to make me completely happy? Then I will let you have spring. I promise not to let the ground hog delay spring any more than that.
These warm temps are not funny. Spring can finish her hibernation until the calendar says she can come out to play.
Is there anybody here who at least shares my sentiments about winter?
Thanks for reading.

I could handle a blizzard, one that dumped the snow, then the roads got cleared quickly, but the snow stayed an insulated things, lol!

@Jessicalynnt There's nothing like a good blizzard. Give me 14 unrepentant inches of snow and I'll be happy for a couple days.

I think you're right. I'm from Maryland where we can get a good bit of snow but we've lived in Louisiana for the last 6 years. Now that we're in Maryland again, I'd love to have a good 2- or 3- foot blizzard for my 4 year old to go out and play in. He was born in Louisiana and has no real concept of what snow actually is. Since we've been here, there's been a dusting of snow but not really enough for him to get nice and tired in. :-) Come on, Mother Nature. Let the babies play!

@katsmeow1213 The east is getting blasted today with a Nor'easter. My forecast keeps changing. Today we have very cold sub zero wind chills.

Absolutely!! You tell her!!
My allergies usually abate when winter really settles in but this year it feels like it's barely been winter at all. The warmth is keeping something I'm allergic to active and keeping me MISERABLE!

I heard a weatherman say several years ago that we need a minimum of two weeks of cold - below zero - weather so all the germs die and we can be healthy. That hasn't happened yet, anywhere I don't think. Temps keep acting like a roller coaster, up one day, down the next. Two weeks and your allergies should be gone. So will all the flu and colds that have run rampant this winter.

@just4him I'm losing hope I actually like snow but I'd even take below zero temps without it.

My daughter loves winter and is very disappointed that we haven't had much snow. I love spring when everything starts to bloom and temperatures aren't too hot

The key being not too hot. I'm glad to know someone else likes winter and snow. It has been a disappointing winter so far. We're in for more rain/ice/snow in the next 24 hours. I'm not sure when it's supposed to start today, but it's going to be a mess when it does.

I've never understood why ground hog's day was such a deal. Spring will still come as it always does as you said March 20th.
Like you, I would like to experience winter while it is winter. We did get one snow last month and I am happy about that. However the 65-75 F degree days have our trees blooming and flowers pushing through already. Going to hurt them when we get another arctic blast. Mid Feb through mid March is when we really have our harshest winter days with cold and snow. If I wanted that warm of temperature I would move to a warmer climate. But I love all 4 of God's seasons and would love to experience them when they are suppose to be. Have a blessed day

Why does a spring blizzard make you happy? Just curious. I wonder where the whole ground hog thing got started....
