Sick of waiting on call backs from doctors when my son is suffering

I pulled my son out of public school in mid October. He is doing cyber schooling at home.
I have been trying since then to get him in to see a psychologist.
His pediatrician called a hospital to set up an appointment for him to be seen about an hour away. Two weeks later I got a letter in the mail saying they did not accept his insurance.
I called the insurance who gave me a list of places he could go. I called two places neither returned my calls.
I got a hold of another guy who sounded great and looked at neurological things. He was moving out of a home office and into a different office over the holidays and would call me and set up an appointment when it was complete. Never heard back from him.
Called an office in town last week to see if a guy I heard was really good could see him. He had a family emergency so he was out of the office for the week. Waiting to hear back now...
I am going to call his pediatrician again and have him do blood work to see if his levels of Vitamin D are low and if they are I will see if he can prescribe him a healthy amount to take daily.
My son is 9 and has been showing signs of depression for at least 6 months. It is getting worse. He didn't want friends. He cries for over an hour and can't calm down until it stops on its own.
He hates his life is sad and mad all the time. He told me he wishes he was never born and wants to die. I am not waiting for these doctors anymore this kid needs help. I will call and nag every day for an appointment from now on until they get him in to be seen.

It is a real shame. I have never heard of such a thing in my country.

I remember when my son's cousin was 10 he had depression and was put on Zoloft. I thought it was crazy and that it was way to young for a kid to have depression. But now with my showing such strong symptoms not it at 9 I am realizing it can happen in young kids.

@shaggin Doctors know what to do depending on the case. But to begin with, you must find a doctor.

That is heartbreaking. The poor little guy needs to see somebody and he needs to see them as soon as possible. It is frustrating when nobody seems to want to help. I do agree the best thing to do is keep calling back every day. It is like the saying goes..the squeaky wheel gets the oil. You have to fight for anything you want now it seems. I hope you are able to get him in to see somebody soon.

That is a shame you have to watch your son go through this until a doctor can see him. I hope you hear back from someone soon so your son can be on the road to get better and get the help he needs. Good luck and hope something good happens soon.

I called his pediatrician and have an appointment with him at 2:45. I am going to ask him about having his levels of Vitamin D checked. I have heard a lot of people say lately it has helped with there depression and how many people around here are very low on Vitamin D is what is causing depression.

I am really sorry to hear about your son. Have you heard about Ayurveda? It's an ancient Indian healing system. Every disease including depression happens because of disbalance in Vata, Pitta and/or Kapha which are doshas or imbalances. You need to use herbs and diet as per your imbalance but a common step in all is to exclude processed or packaged food and have only warm and fresh organic food. Also including yoga or simpler exercises, having a daily routine with waking, sleeping and eating meals at the same time helps a great deal. There is extensive detail available online. You can also order medicine nowadays. One link with useful info
Hope it's helpful and let me know for further advice.
Allopathic medicine tackles the symptoms of depression with medication and therapy. Ayurveda uses a different approach. Ayurveda seeks first to understand the body’s imbalances in the bioenergies also known as an dosha and then prescribe a course of treatm

That would be good but eating a specific diet is extremely expensive. He does get children's multivitamins but there are probably still a lot of things he is lacking in his diet. Him being tested for Vitamin D deficiency is a start.

This is the case of too many patients and few doctors. This scene is common everywhere. Hope you will be able to get hold of someone to treat your son.

My daughter had much the same issue with her oldest son. Getting help is near impossible. Just keep pushing and praying!! When people blame parents for things that happen with kids they have obviously never tried to get the necessary help and it has nothing to do with having money or being poor, everyone has trouble.

I only write about him mostly here at mylot where no one knows us in person and willnjudge him or I. Too many people are way to fast to blame parents for things. I was a difficult kid myself and nothing my parents did worked so I sympathize with parents when others are putting them down for their kids problems.

@BelleStarr Thankfully my son is little and I watch him like a hawk at home. When he is a teen this could get a lot worse. I need him to get the help he needs now before it gets worse. Getting him help should not be so hard. It is so frustrating!

@shaggin I was thinking about some of the more publicized events where kids ended up doing violent things and everyone asks didn't their parents notice? Well of course they did and tried to get help but that is easier said than done.

I wish I knew how to help you. I hate it when children are sad. You don't get to be a child for very long. You should be able to enjoy those innocent years. Psychologist aside, is there anything you think you can do to break through? There has to be a reason he's hurting. If you've taken tests and nothing physical can be found, then you have to explore the emotional and mental aspects. What was he like before? Can you remind him of any good times he once had and how he felt? Maybe that will get him back on track. Do some research and find out about other children and their stories. I find it hard to believe you have a doctor and that doctor can't assist you properly with getting some mental help for that child. They're all doctors. They're in a network! Surely they know how to refer patients to one another!! Your situation sounds very distressing for you and your child.

@cmoneyspinner It helps that I have been through this myself so I see all the signs where others just think he's being difficult. Some days I cry but I know hopefully soon he will feel better and then I will feel better not having to watch him go through this. It may be a long road. I do feel guilty having children and bringing them into this world with the issues I have. My daughter who is 12 seems fine so far so that is a relief!

@shaggin - The fact that you finally got an appointment is great news!! Meanwhile, and I know it will be hard, but be patient with him. He's troubled and probably just as confused and as frightened as you are. You're an adult. He's a child. There is a lot in this world he hasn't even learned. On top of being ignorant of the world he lives in, he is also sometimes sad, sometimes angry, sometimes … he doesn't even know what! A word of caution, be careful if meds are prescribed. His body and brain are still growing and developing. If it is at all possible for prescription meds to be avoided then do so. If not, then be sure there is no abuse in taking the meds and/or over-medicating. I don't mean to offend as I don't know your religious preferences. I say this with a sincere heart of kindness and compassion. I believe in prayer, so I will pray for you and your child.

@shaggin - Yes. I not only sympathize but I can empathize. I am not a stranger to mental illness. It can be hard on the individual who is ill and on the family and friends who are trying to care for them and trying to be supportive. Many get frustrated, fell helpless, and give up! It's dark. All I can tell you is that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. But believe that the darkness is temporary and keep looking to find that permanent light!

I called his pediatrician today for the results of his blood work and he told me that he is slightly low on Vitamin D and to give him that and calcium supplements but the levels are not low enough that it could be causing these problems. I called another office in town again and they said I needed to call another office to talk to a lady about scheduling. So I called there and they said I needed to talk to the lady at the first office I called. She said they would call me back. I told them I have already been waiting two weeks and will give them a few more days.

His pediatrician seemed pretty frustrated about it all as well how the doctors aren't calling me back and we are getting nowhere. He did agree to check his blood for Vitamin D deficiency and he checked him for lead as well for some reason. He told me to switch my insurance as the one we have is very rarely accepted anywhere. So this is a good start.
