Do you have a head for heights?

On our way to the deep south of Western Australia with our Taiwanese visitors we took the opportunity to call into the Diamond Tree. I've written about it before. It is near Walpole and is one of three fire lookout trees located in the area. At the top, 52 metres up, is a wooden viewing platform. The giant karri trees in this area are magnificent and almost take your breath away with their majesty. The two ladies managed a token climb part-way up the rather scary ladder. Vince and I were happy to watch from below. The climbing rungs are iron bars and there is a flimsy wire behind the climbers which wouldn't be of any earthly use if someone were to slip off the bars. Do you have a head for heights or would you be watching from the safety of Mother Earth?

Well, that's the most important one. Have you got to the top yet?

Wow that is awesome! It must be quite the view at the top but I think I would be happiest just watching from the ground.

I think the top of the tree sways about two metres from side to side if there is a bit of a wind blowing.

I used to love climbing tees when I was young but now I probably would not go too high.

@JudyEv We can't afford to take chances and do some serious damage. We want the body in one piece.

@MALUSE I feel sick even when I use the ladder to clean on the top of the furniture and I wash the curtains.

@JudyEv I get vertigo, so even if I try I know that I am in danger. Last year I was storing blankets on the upper shelves in our bedroom. I have looked down from the ladder and I have fallen. Thanks God I landed on the bed.

@LadyDuck @MALUSE Luckily it doesn't worry me. Vince doesn't like high heights but he manages otherwise. They don't worry me.

I am afraid of heights it makes me all dizzy and gives me the sensation as if I am falling! I am pretty useless. I am ok at night but not in the day time. I freeze and shake. What a wimp eh!

And you don't like snakes either! Vince says his stomach starts to churn just looking at photos of ladders and such. Maybe that is why he is looking down in this photo.

It is difficult to get the whole of the tree in one photo. It's a long way to the top.

@fishtiger58 Imagine going up that every day to start work. :) I guess the trees were only manned in the fire season.

I think I might have been able to climb up the tree.. but may not have been so happy on the actual viewing platform... but the desire to see the view and take photos... would have been a strong incentive... that ... and not looking down once i was up the top... lol

There is a photo on the web somewhere - or maybe on Vince's FB - which shows the view back down the tree. Pretty scary!

I would be watching from the safety of mother earth. Only if I didn't know the climbers. I couldn't watch anybody I know making that kind of climb.

It looks like something that should be on a show for adventurous people like fear factor but not gross stuff just scary stuff like that climbing really high stuff. I will watch from the ground.

I might have when I was younger but not now. And apparently in a wind the top does swing several metres.
