Did You Have a Happy Valentine's Day?

February 15, 2017 12:26pm CST
Do you celebrate this holiday of chocolates, roses, and romance? It's funny sometimes to think that St. Valentine was actually beaten and beheaded, yet here we are celebrating with silly cards and candy. But, of course, that is what he would have wanted probably! He died because he thought it was wrong for Emperor Claudius to outlaw weddings. He continued to marry people in secret, but was caught. We keep it pretty low-key here. I refuse to set foot in a crazy packed restaurant on Valentine's day. We usually have a nice dinner at home. I always make my husband tapioca pudding which he loves. I always buy my kids a small box of chocolates. My husband usually buys me some fancy chocolates. Today, the kids are having their Valentine's party at co-op with boxes and cards and the like. I'm sure we will come home with some more candy. As my picture says, Happy Half Price Candy day! :-)

We do not make to much out of V-day either. I buy choc for all the kids & reeses Pieces for the Man (it is his fav) He gets ma a little choc. I know that even with as many of us as there are we do not go over $20. Hubby and I try to have dinner out alone the weekend before or after. Not a fan of the big waiting times or crowds at restaurants.

@jillybean1222 haha that will teach you to break tradition. I always laugh at the figure they throw out for Easter, Valentines day, or even Halloween. We just do not go big for any of those and keep it small. Now I may go a bit overboard for Christmas & b-day's though.

@mom210 some years, i have gone overboard on easter. it just can add up a bit. like one year, they each got a lego set & th older one got a pretty pricy one... but he was kind of into them then (last time he was). but sometimes the little things add up

it's funny, the kids always remember the year that i bought them an XBOX for valentine's day... the thing is that i keep telling them is that it was just the TIMING... i had JUST finished finishing the basement & i wanted them to have a gaming system down there. it happened to be valentine's day. i bought them one. i'm like: WE DO NOT DO GIFTS FOR V-DAY!!!! but they always bring it up hoping i'll do something like that again. i'm like: here's your $2 box of chocolates... :-)

It was a quiet year on that front for my husband and I. He took a job 150 km's from home here, so he lives at our son's place up near there during the workweek, while I am back here packing up the house and counting down the days (44) until we move. But last weekend, when he was home, we celebrated. Tomorrow would have been our daughter, Brittany's, 26th birthday. So my heart is weak at this time of the year-you know how that feels. Will you remind your kids how wonderful they are tomorrow, go a little overboard for this Momma who can't tell her daughter that, but will tell her son. Thanks!

@jillybean1222 Thanks, I know that you'd understand, and I got a lot out of the post that you put up in December on how you made good of Nolan's anniversary, and I thought to myself, that I need to start to look at the good that can be done in her name. Tomorrow I will try my hardest to do just that. Our son always goes out, alone, for a shot, then he takes a second one for his sister. Its way of quietly recognizing her.

@Juliaacv it is such a hard thing to do, to figure out what to do... i think we keep learning as we go. my husband keeps his side of it very private. so it's not something we do together.

I'm sorry that you are nearing one of those milestone days that are so difficult. It's so bittersweet celebrating anything with the others at times. Hugs!

Yes, it was nice but we didn't stay until late because we both had to wake up early. We did celebrate with an early fancy dinner on Friday. We thought it would be less busy and we found a nice offer with a special menu that was valid for last week.

I think your little Valentine's Day at home sounds perfect. I have never had homemade tapioca pudding but I used to love eating it at lunch when I was in high school. I litetally did not know any of that information about St. Valentine

There is more than one Valentine listed among the Roman Catholic saints, the one celebrated on this day is s the former Bishop of Terni, a town of Umbria (Italy). We did celebrate with a nice dinner together, no exchange of gifts.

Mine was wonderful. We at at a swanky steakhouse which has the same prices as always. It also takes reservations, so it wasn't overcrowded.

Sounds like the ideal Valentine's Day to me. We don't celebrate it as it was introduced here well after we were kids so it never became anything special.
