The longest covered bridge in the world

One of the places that we visited while camping was the longest covered bridge in the world. It is called the Hartland Bridge and is located on Hartland, NB Canada. It is about 230 km (143 miles) from where I live. It crosses the Saint John River and it is 1282 ft (391 m) long. It is quite the site to see. The picture is of the bridge and my grand daughter with the bridge in the background. It is thought to bring you good luck if you can hold your breath for the entire drive across the bridge. My grand daughter thought that was great. We drove back and forth across it a few times. Many years ago my fiance's grandfather use to have a job shoveling snow into the bridge. The horse drawn sleighs needed snow for their runners in order to cross the bridge. During the winter months it was a full time job for 8 men. Do you have covered bridges where you live? We have quite a few but a lot of them have been destroyed by river ice over the years. It is always sad when another one get taken down. For more information on the bridge here is the Wikipedia link.

There are no windows it is dark when you drive through. There is also a walking tunnel to the side, which you are see in the picture, where you can walk across.

There are no covered bridges here, but when I lived in New England they were numerous. However, not any as long as this one you have shown us. It is great all the history of it too thanks Laurel.

@TiarasOceanView yes there is so much history behind it. Many people have crossed through that bridge since 1906. If the bridge could talk it would have lots of stories to tell.

You are welcome. We have a lot smaller ones but this is the longest in the world so there is not another like it. It is really something to see.

Wow, that is pretty amazing and so interesting that they had to shovel snow into the area for the sleighs.

Wow in the view with your granddaughter on the boulder you get a really good idea of just how long this bridge is. I have seen a few but they are a few hours from me.

We went to NB when our first son was just under two years old. Beautiful country! Too bad we missed this bridge. There are many in New England where I live, but much shorter in length. Fun tradition of holding your breath. I'd need my sports car to cross it before I gasp for air.

There is a very old covered bridge in a small town thats not very far from us. Every year that town holds a festival surrounding the history of that bridge its always a lot of fun.

That sounds like a lot of fun. A lot of people around here get their wedding photo done at the various covered bridges.
