I notice the differences in my parent's generation and my generation. On my mother's side they are 9 siblings and on my father's side they are 7 siblings. Also my neighbor's around they are many siblings too in same generation with my parents. But in my generation the average children of a family is from 2 to 4 children. I wonder why it change suddenly? If you are 7 children in the family you will amaze people when generations ago it was perfectly normal to have more children. What could have cause the drop in number of children? How big is your family?

I have only 3 kids, because that's all I can handle, all I can afford, etc. But I only have one sister, six years younger than me. So I'm used to a small family. It's not like the old days when families were bigger, plus back then there were more farms and such, so it's like having a bigger famiky was expected. The drop in bigger families is again, not everyone can afford it, money or mentally

@librarygeek1980 There's still big families today and they are found in those poorer families. They have 12 children even if they are so poor. While most rich families here I see will just have 2 or 3. Poor families have no family planning and are not wiser than their rich counterparts

@averygirl72 true, but ive personally seen mothers of big families very burned out, burned out to the point of forgetting a child, burned to the point of putting the mothers health at risk, etc.

@averygirl72 Yes, our family is very small, but very close. My older son's wife comes from a large family and our younger son is marrying into a large family. We are all very close, so it's one big happy family!

Yeah that is the ideal now. Maybe before people are not worried to have many children

@averygirl72 I think so. That is because they have wide areas of land for their children, they do not worry about sending them to school and they are contented with the kind of life they have.
Unlike today that areas for living are too limited. Everybody wants to finish schooling but education costs so high.

We are 5 siblings in the family. In my hubby's part they are 5 siblings.
Most of us siblings has only 3 at the maximum for our children. While on my hubby's side , the most is 2.
The reason: life is hard when there are lots to feed. So, the most ideal one is 3. My officemates who have one child , even after 5 years, doesn't want to have a child yet. The reason to is the same.
I guess, long ago, life is good and easy so the parents have 4-5 children.
In my opinion, it is very nice to have at least 4 children.
I only had one.

my siblings and cousins only have 2 -3 children, maybe because of our experience growing up with too many siblings.

are the siblings of your mother's side at 2 years gap each? maybe, family planning was not yet introduced that time. we have a neighbor here; the wife bore a dozen children, but almost all of them are now successful in their respective lives.

@averygirl72 no they are not rich;in fact, they belong to the poverty-level, but the children have their own lives now, still poor but they are happy

My dad has 5 siblings. My mom has 7. I have 3 siblings. If I'll have kids in the future, I just want 1 or 2. Economic reasons, probably.

I have 2 kids, 1 is a new born. But me and my husband both are the only child of our parents. Here in our country the idea of having only 1 or 2 kids is promoted. Todays youth(exceptions are there) do not have enough patience, efficiency and courage to have number of kids, though i love the idea of having as many as possible but me too find it tough too deal with it. Especially now as i am the mother of a new born and still strying to settle down, may be in future.
But both my kids are daughters and we get this societal pressure on us when we have more than one daughter and no son..there is a lot of gender inequality here.

Yes in some country they encourage just 1 or 2 kids but it's more fun if you're at least 4 like in my family
