Ex boyfriend made me gasp for air!

I have done this a few times where I wake up gasping for air. Usually it's because I'm dreaming of being under water. Which is very scary and annoying.
So obviously my ex boyfriend ( Aidan ) can't control my dreams but I still blame him for the nightmares he has caused me to have. He may be out of my life but the memories still remain.
Basically I dreamed I was with him in a room and I desperately wanted to leave because he was scaring me. But he did that psycho smirk he used to do, came toward me and held me so I couldn't leave. ( which actually did happen once by the way )
In the dream I could feel complete anxiety and trouble breathing. Exactly the way he made me feel in real life when things were terrifying. I kept struggling and trying to breathe begging him to let me go but he just wouldn't.
Only thing that stopped it was from me waking up letting out a loud gasp and trying to breathe again. I quickly turned the lamp on to look around the room and just sat up in bed for awhile trying to shake it off.
I've had a lot of dreams where I'm being chased by scary monsters but never in my life have I been so afraid of the monster that was real in my awake life.
I hate him.

@VivaLaDani13 my experiences have made me who I am today. They may not be the best or nicest but I wouldn't have me any other way :)

@pammooratan That is true. But keeping in mind that these dreams are actually coming from what happened in reality.

Sorry to hear that he still haunts you even after he's gone. Hopefully, over time, the unpleasant memories of him will fade until such time as you barely remember him.

@VivaLaDani13 If I visited you in your dreams, I would make you gasp for air too, but for reasons that you would greatly enjoy!

@moffittjc Me too. He was in it again last night! Sometimes after a bad dream like that I feel like yelling at him letting him know how much damage he has done even after he has gone.
Thank you for your encouraging words.

@VivaLaDani13 Hoping that for you, too. I once asked a woman how she got mixed up with a man like that. She told me he was very nice and considerate to her when she first met him. It wasn't until he was sure she wouldn't leave him that he became a total a-hole. Here's a little tip that may help you. When you go out on a first date pay close attention to how he treats other people like waitresses. If he treats them like dirt or quickly gets angry at them or makes jokes about them then it is a good bet he will do the same to you in the future no matter how nice and considerate he is to you. After all, at that point he is trying his best to impress you.

I know this feeling.
I wanted to wake up but my body felt pinned to the bed and I couldn't move. My mind was telling me to wake up and I was shouting my name in my dream but I couldn't do anything. It's the worst feeling not having any control of your body.

@VivaLaDani13 it's horrible what we go through when asleep. Why can't all dreams be happy. It would be great if dreaming was a happy place.

Yes bad memories can make for scary dreams. I have had no bad dreams but I have had moments that for some reason something wakes me up and suddenly I feel like I cannot breathe. Then I take a big breath and try to calm myself down. It is a most scary feeling.

@VivaLaDani13 never thought about it because it wakes me up and then when I go back to sleep I sleep normally.

@RasmaSandra That sounds horrible! I wonder what is causing that! Have you ever tried researching what that may be for you to be doing that?

@Daljinder Can you pick him up and throw him out of the window? He used to threaten to do that to me a lot.

The relationship was traumatic for you so that is why he continues to show up in your times. He may no longer be a part of your life but the emotional scars are real and they continue to haunt you.
