Addicted to Sugar I Think

I'm On Day 3 of My No Sugar experiment...This is a little harder than I expected, but I knew that it needed to be done. Darling daughter and I had a chat about it, and she goes the entire week without sugar and then on the weekend, she allows herself to have dessert on Saturday and Sunday. The only thing that worries me about this is the fact that what if sugar addiction is like being addicted to alcohol. If you give in once... you have just set yourself up for failure. Same thing when I used to smoke while in university. I had to go "cold turkey" and it has been 38 years this month since I touched a cigarette. I'm kind of worried that sugar is going to be the same thing. Do I have to completely stop or is it okay to have dessert on Saturday and Sunday??

I'd say that's totally up to you . . . you can be hardcore about not eating any sugar at all . . . or be ok with having it every now and then, and you don't have to feel like a failure just because you have a little. I would love to cut back on sugar completely, but it's nearly impossible, especially if you buy any convenience foods or eat out. Instead we have opted to cut down on sugar - by a lot. I also eat bitter greens . . . they say that somehow that makes you less craving of sweets. Stuff like fruits have natural sugar in them - that can always be a healthier choice dessert too.

@Hate2Iron I know too well about the candy stash and I have a weakness for that too.

It's my candy stash that I really have to watch. I have stayed away from that for 3 days and that is something for me.

I think just being aware of how much sugar you are intaking is a good thing, I thinking giving up things make it more tempting, by this I mean food not cigs, everyone needs to quit cigs but sugar is not a killer unless you are diabetic. I think dessert needs to be part of life or life isn't worth living lol bring on an occasional piece of cake, pie or cookies and I have to say, my mom is 102, she is French Canadian, she always had dessert with every meal except breakfast but she had brown sugar on her oatmeal. So, it can't be all that bad for you in moderation.

@Hate2Iron My mother made the best sugar pie in the world. But in reality, even with dessert, it is the added sugar (and high fructose corn syrup) in prepackaged foods that is the culprit so if you make your own foods you won't be getting too much in general.

I could handle that (dessert with every meal lol) but diabetes runs in our family and I'm already pre- so I really have to be careful. Ahhhh... sugar pie is suddenly coming to mind.

I am addicted to sugar. I know, I need to watch out about it. I really do need to cut down on it, but it is hard.

I'm kind of worried about tomorrow, when I allow myself just a little. Will I be able to go back to nothing for 5 days??

Ooo wow. Good for you. I know, it's hard. Do you allow yourself any of the sugar free stuff? I'm not sure what to say as for cold turkey and none or allow yourself on weekends.... I think whatever works for the person

No artificial sweetners which would make it a whole lot easier... but I want as healthy as possible. Ask me next week lol!

You should not stop taking sugar all-together. We do need some amounts of sugar in our body. We just need to limit ourselves to sweet things. Having a dessert on weekends is okay

Some can have a dessert every once in awhile and then get back on track. For others it's a disaster. Good luck.

I read it is better to have a little of what you want rather than cut it out completely. Cutting it out might result in bingeing which is worse.

Due to health reasons I am not allowed to consume sugar but I do use the diet version of sugar substitute.

Good luck with your reason to cut sugar too. I'm definitely going to look into stevia for that very reason!!

You can still enjoy the sweet taste of sugar by using natural sweeteners like stevia; but not aspartame which is said to have negative effects on one's health.

I tried the no sugar and lasted two weeks. Then found a better way of doing it - like having it three days a week. It's been months now and I haven't fallen off the wagon.
